Illinois vs Wyoming Betting Analysis

After a hot start to last year’s campaign in the Mountain West, the Wyoming Cowboys won just two of their final eight games to cap off the year. However, that was enough to get them into a bowl game against Kent State where they dispatched the Golden Flashes via a 52-38 victory in the Idaho Potato Bowl.

Illinois meanwhile missed out on a bowl game altogether last season, but did enjoy solid wins against Penn State and Minnesota and will look to get their second consecutive Week 0 start off to another flyer after polishing off Nebraska last year by eight points in Champaign.

Saturday’s meeting will be the first time either side will have faced each other in competitive football action.

Blend Of Youth And Experience At Wyoming

The Cowboys enter 2022 with one of the youngest rosters in the entire country, ranking #1 in terms of overall percentage of underclassmen (84.2%) that make up the team as a whole.

However, head coach Craig Bohl also welcomes back a wealth of experience from last season also, with five returning starters who earned PFF honors last year in the Mountain West Conference, so Wyoming should provide a solid blend of talent and experience this season.

Illinois Continues Defensive Improvement

The Fighting Illini put pen to paper on a new contract extension for defensive coordinator Ryan Walters last November as he instigated one of the biggest turnarounds out of any FBS program last year.

In 2020, Illinois were allowing an average of 34.9 ppg to opponents, and through Walters efforts last season, cut that down to just 21.9 ppg, the third best defensive improvement out of any Illinois team over the last 70 years.

Illinois vs Wyoming Prediction

While the line has moved quite significantly since the opener, we nevertheless believe there is still some value in taking Illinois to win and cover against Wyoming on Saturday.

Wyoming have notched just one win against Big Ten opposition over their entire program’s history, with that coming all the way back in 1986, so this is a huge step up for the men from Laramie.

On top of that, Illinois have enjoyed a fantastic record in season openers at Memorial Stadium, going 61-28-4 across their last 93 opening games inside this venue. We’re taking Illinois -13 on Saturday to win and cover at home against Wyoming in Week 0.
