Every year I’ve said the following: “One day the Pirates will learn how to play run defense”.  That day finally came, and the Pirates won eight games, their most since 2013.  The next step is to finish in the top part of the conference.

ECU Football Predictions: AREAS TO WATCH

The 2023 rush ratio (5.3-3.7 a year ago). 

Their leading RB (7.2) and four OL are gone, and the LB unit appears weaker.  QB Ahlers left as well.  In 469 pass attempts he had just five interceptions.  Counting the bowl game, ECU was +13 in turnover margin.  This will move back to the mean, translating to a loss of “free” points.  The staff is intact, which has to be a plus in this league, with all the moving parts. 

There are six new coaches for 2023, and another three are in just the 2^nd season.  Yes, ECU fixed the run defense, but the pass defense suffered, at 66%.  The point defense has never been stout under Mike Houston.

ECU 2023 Predictions, East Carolina Pirates Schedule:

ECU will face an easier schedule, but not in games 1-3 (at Michigan, Marshall, at App St).  ECU hosts SMU, who has been ascending.  The winner of that game might be taken seriously in the AAC. 

The best of the six new members is UTSA.  They host ECU.  Games 9-10 are home to Tulane (won at home in 2021, but lost 24-9 last year) and at FAU, who might be a team to watch. 

The goal is 3-1 in the above four AAC games, and wins the other four games, which will find ECU favored.  ECU lost as a -16 home favorite to Navy and lost 42-3 favored by 6 hosting ’22 member Houston, so winning when expected is not a guarantee.  Watch QB play, OL play, and the point defense closely.

ECU Football Bottom Line:

5-3 or 4-4 before a tougher than people think November schedule.  This at the very least should be another bowl outing, but given this staff’s experience advantage, this better be 7-5, and at least a shot at cracking the top four in the league standings.

ECU Football HANDICAPPING TIP:

Mike Houston has seen his team go 11-4 ATS as a road dog.  I’d prefer to fade them only vs. established coaching staffs at this point, and look to back them in favorable road dog situations, plus where they may have a rushing advantage.
