I was just a bit off on the coaching change.  I expected Geoff Collins to be gone, but not during 2022.  Brent Key went 4-4 in an interim role, and was rewarded with the full-time job.  Now it’s time to change their outdated offense.  How much time will be needed before there’s noticeable improvement?

Georgia Tech Football Predictions: AREAS TO WATCH

Buster Faulkner is the new offensive coordinator.  Most of his resume reads group of five jobs, but he was on the Georgia staff since 2020 as a quality control coach.  Yes, GT went 4-4 down the stretch, but they scored just 151 points in these eight games. 

I’m optimistic about run game improvement but have to see for myself if QB play can translate into more endzone trips.  The defense allowed 214 points under Key.  The run defense was below par (4.75-196) as I expected, and did not improve with the coaching change.  The pass defense percentage did improve and was above average for the season overall. 

The secondary could continue to be solid, but the run defense needs to be charted early and often.  Their leading returning tackler had 54 in total.  GT lost their top two guys who combined for 230 tackles.  One final concern I have is replicating their +11 turnover ratio. 

In college, each turnover equates to 3.75 points.  That’s over 40 points lost if the ratio is flat (+0) in 2023.  Kicking seems solid, but special team play as a whole has never been great.

Georgia Tech 2023 Predictions, Georgia Tech Schedule:

Bowling Green replaces UCF on the non-conference schedule, and the ACC schedule is also easier, so right away GT could be in bowl contention.  The season opens in Atlanta with a game vs. Louisville and their new staff.  Could a win here be the difference between a bowl berth and sitting at home?  GT travels to Wake on 9/23. 

A split in these two games should get them to 3-2 before they head to Miami.  That game could be tough. 

The goal is 2-0 when home to BC (GT off rest) and home to UNC (two straight upsets vs. the Tar Heels).  Two other win shots are on the schedule.  They go to Virginia (2-8 at their place, but Virginia may not be very good in ’23) and host Syracuse (letdown spot for GT off Clemson).

Georgia Tech Football Bottom Line:

If the offense improves, 6-6 and a bowl berth would be a reasonable goal.  I have this closer to 5-7 or even 4-8, especially if the turnover margin regresses toward the mean.

Georgia Tech Football HANDICAPPING TIP:

I’ll start out open-minded about their games for 2023, but if the offense does not look any better, then I suspect I’ll try to find more vs. spots.
