Undefeated Puerto Rican 154lb contender Xander Zayas returns to action this Saturday night over in New York City as he takes on tough Mexican warrior Jorge Garcia Perez in a fight that should go some way to reigniting the famous Mexican/Puerto Rican rivalry from decades past.

Promoter’s Top Rank have done a good job of guiding the 22-year-old Zayas so far, netting him some impressive wins along the way, the most notable of which came against former WBO light-middleweight champion Patrick Teixeira last year.

Xander Zayas comes into this fight as the -450 favorite, with Garcia Perez coming back as the +320 underdog.

Still A Learning Curve For Zayas

With eleven national championship tournament wins under his belt, including two gold medals at the 2017 and 2018 U.S. National Championship games, respectively, the sky looks to be the limit as far as Xander Zayas’ professional career goes.

While Top Rank has done a good job of guiding his prodigious talent up to this point, the training wheels will come off on Saturday night as he steps up to fight for his first world title in an absolutely loaded division containing champions such as Bakhram Murtazaliev, Terence Crawford, Sebastian Fundora, and Vergil Ortiz Jr.

Garcia Perez Looks To Capture The Moment

Despite some initial setbacks and losses earlier in his career, Jorge Garcia Perez’s recent winning run has been highly impressive, so much so that it has landed him a title shot as the WBO’s #2 ranked contender this Saturday.

The biggest win of the 28-year-old’s career to date, however, was undoubtedly beating the previously unbeaten Charles Conwell earlier this year by split decision, and the Mexican fighter will be looking to crash the party once again this weekend against Zayas.

Garcia Perez is certainly no slouch in the ring, creating a ton of problems for fierce puncher Charles Conwell in his last fight, a fighter who had previously stopped 16 of his 20 opponents prior to that bout.

However, Zayas has an incredible offensive arsenal at his disposal, able to effortlessly wing in hooks and counters both upstairs and down, and against Perez, who likes to tuck in under that high guard and walk forward, Zayas’s greater overall versatility could be the difference maker in this one.

Conwell was a little too eager to go headhunting in that last fight, failing to take advantage of Garcia Perez’s exposed midriff when he opened up.

If Xander Zayas’ team have done their homework and go to the body early in this one, we could envision a late round stoppage for the Puerto Rican sensation as he wears down Perez in the later rounds.
