Josh Taylor vs Ekow Essuman Betting Analysis

Former 140lb undisputed champion Josh ‘The Tartan Tornado’ Taylor will look to get his career back on track this weekend when he takes on European welterweight champion Ekow Essuman over at the SSE Hydro in Glasgow, Scotland.

This is a do-or-die fight for Scotland’s Taylor, who enter’s Saturday’s fight coming off back-to-back losses, as well as entering a new weight division also.

Josh Taylor enters Saturday’s showdown as the -330 favorite, with Ekow Essuman coming back as a +240 underdog.

Tornado Blown Off Course

After securing the biggest win of his career so far in 2021 over Jose Ramirez to secure 140lb dominance, becoming only the second Scottish fighter ever to achieve undisputed status, it’s fair to say it’s been mostly downhill for Josh Taylor since.

An extremely controversial decision over Jack Catterall less than a year after that historic triumph was met with boos, followed by a one-sided loss against Teofimo Lopez in NYC a year later, with yet another loss against the aforementioned Jack Catterall in their rematch in Leeds last year.

That means it’s all on the line for Taylor this weekend as he looks to reclaim his former glory.

Essuman’s Hard Road Finally Paying Dividends

Originally from Botswana, Ekow ‘The Engine’ Essuman hasn’t enjoyed the easiest road to success and becoming a headline act for the first-time ever in the UK.

However, with solid wins over the likes of Chris Jenkins and Chris Kongo, Essuman has firmly put his name on the map, at least domestically, and if he can secure another huge upset win over Taylor this Saturday, Essuman will become a major player in the 147lb title picture.

While Taylor enjoyed his best days at 140lb, it’s a division that he outgrew a while ago at this point, and it’s surprising it’s taken him as long as it has to finally move up.

He complained about the weight after the first Jack Catterall fight, and after starting the Teofimo Lopez fight fast, I personally had Taylor 3-1 up after four rounds, from the 5th round of that fight onwards, his legs seemed to completely give way and it was effectively a shutout for the rest of the way.

Trainer Joe McNally told the waiting press immediately after that fight that Taylor was done at 140lbs, yet Taylor was adament about sticking around in the division for a while longer with so many big names potentially for him to fight.

However, while it may have taken a couple of extra years longer than Joe McNally would have liked, Josh Taylor has finally moved up in weight, and he should look a lot fresher as a result.

Essuman meanwhile is no joke, being fast twitch for the weight, with his recent stoppage victory over Owen Cooper showing he has grit when needed also, being down himself in the round immediately prior to the sensational stoppage.

While Essuman is no easy out though, Taylor’s vastly greater experience at the very top level of the sport, combined with the fact that he’s fighting on home soil, means that the Scotsman has every advantage going into this one, and we expect the ‘Tartan Tornado’ to bounce back with a solid victory on Saturday when the two fighters meet in Glasgow.
