Devin Haney vs Jose Ramirez Betting Analysis

Friday, May 2nd sees a huge card taking place over in Times Square in NYC for the first time ever, featuring three of the most popular fighters on the planet, Teofimo Lopez, Devin Haney, and Ryan Garcia.

While headline act Ryan Garcia takes on Rolly Romero in the main event, Devin Haney, in the co-feature, will look for some redemption when he takes on former unified titleholder Jose Ramirez at 147lb.

With both men moving up to a new weight class ahead of this one, it sets up an interesting fight as to which fighter’s skills will transition over more effectively to the new division, Haney’s speed and reflexes, or Jose Ramirez’s aggression and power.

Books, and the majority of the public, seem to favor the former, with Devin ‘The Dream’ Haney coming into this one as the prohibitive -920 favorite on Friday, with Jose Ramirez coming back as a +660 underdog.

The Dream Quickly Turns Into A Nightmare

After a 31-0 start to his career, as well as an undisputed run at lightweight also, Devin ‘The Dream’ Haney looked set to become one of the major players in the 140/147lb divisions moving forward.

All that momentum came to a crashing halt in his last fight however when he took on old amateur foe Ryan Garcia who put him down three times in that fight en route to a shocking points decision victory, one marred by controversy not long after.

Garcia was found to have Ostarine in his system after the fight, a performing-enhancing drug, which led to Garcia’s victory being overturned to a no-contest, as well as Garcia receiving a suspension along with a hefty $1.2 million dollar fine also.

That came as little comfort to Haney however who returns to his first fight back since that humbling performance, and to one we know little if there is any lasting impact of.

Jose Ramirez Determined Not To Be A Stepping Stone

With many people assuming that Ryan Garcia’s fight against Rolly Romero, and Devin Haney’s fight against Jose Ramirez, are merely stepping stones to an eventual rematch between the pair down the road, former 140lb unified champion Jose Ramirez is one man who is fully intent on scuppering those plans.

Jose Ramirez has admitted that he stayed too long at the 140lb limit, a decision that he says impacted him the most in his recent loss against Arnold Barboza Jr. back in November.

With Ramirez’s style being predicated on high pressure and aggression, the move to 147lb will suit his natural strength much more he believes, something we’ll find out conclusively this Friday.

Devin Haney vs Jose Ramirez Expert Prediction

Devin Haney is an extremely gifted boxer, employing range particularly well with a piston-like jab and the ability to catch over-zealous opponents on the way in, just as he did against Regis Prograis recently.

That said, these odds are simply too wide in our opinion, especially on a fighter moving to a new weight class, coming off a lop-sided beatdown in his last fight, and one who hasn’t fought in over a year as well.

Jose Ramirez, while basic in some areas, is extremely durable, and employs non-stop pressure in the ring, something that Haney will have to deal with for the full twelve rounds.

A 100% Haney coming in at a settled weight with no ring rust, we would happily back to beat Ramirez more often than not, but given the extended time off for Haney ahead of this one, coupled with the question marks of if the new weight will slow him down, plus if he has any mental hangover from suffering his first loss in his last fight, those are enough legitimate concerns for us to take the gamble on Ramirez in this one to potentially pull off the massive upset.

Devin Haney vs Jose Ramirez Prediction: Jose Ramirez ML (+700)
