Brickyard 400 Track: Indianapolis Motor Speedway

The Brickyard 400 is one of NASCAR’s crown jewel events, held at the legendary Indianapolis Motor Speedway, a 2.5-mile rectangular oval steeped in motorsports history.

Unlike the high banked superspeedways, Indianapolis features flat 9-degree corners, making braking, corner exit, and track position far more important than outright speed.

The long straightaways allow cars to build tremendous speed, but passing opportunities are limited, placing extra emphasis on qualifying and pit strategy.

The track’s smooth surface and long green-flag runs reward drivers who can conserve their tires while maintaining speed over an entire fuel run.

Precision is everything at Indianapolis, as even a small mistake entering one of the four identical corners can cost valuable time all the way down the next straightaway.

Drivers with patience and strong intermediate-track programs have traditionally excelled at the Brickyard, where execution on pit road is often just as important as performance on the track.

Winning the Brickyard 400 is considered one of the biggest accomplishments in NASCAR, placing a driver’s name alongside some of the greatest champions in motorsports history.

Brickyard 400 Head-to-Head Prediction: William Byron -120 over Chase Briscoe

I like Toyota’s on these ovals, but Byron has been solid on the big ovals with some upside he has finishes of 3rd, 7th, 8th, 9th and 3rd on big tracks.

Briscoe has some nice finishes as well, but 12th at Pocono and 10th at Michigan aren’t good enough for the upside that Byron has. Briscoe does have a win in Chicago at an oval, but it’s a different type of oval than this flat oval at Indianapolis, more similar to Pocono than anything else. Byron is the play.
