Mize was added to San Diego’s active roster immediately after being acquired at the deadline. He enters with a 2.70 ERA, 0.99 WHIP, 85 strikeouts and 19 walks over 86⅔ innings. Bratt enters at 0–1 with a 5.23 ERA and remains one of Arizona’s lower-volume starters.
MODEL PROJECTION
Period | SDP | ARI | Total |
|---|---|---|---|
First 5 innings | 3.0 | 1.8 | 4.8 |
Full game | 5.3 | 3.8 | 9.1 |
Projected final score: San Diego 5.3, Arizona 3.8
The largest advantage is concentrated in the starting-pitcher portion. Mize owns a significant edge in ERA, WHIP, command, workload and demonstrated major-league performance. Bratt’s Triple-A profile was impressive, but his major-league transition has produced more traffic and fewer innings per start than Mize’s established workload. Bratt entered professional baseball as a starter and posted a 2.84 ERA and 0.95 WHIP in Triple-A before his promotion.
San Diego’s lineup is also constructed favorably against a left-handed starter. Fernando Tatis Jr., Luis Rengifo, Manny Machado, Ty France, Xander Bogaerts, Freddy Fermín and a likely right-handed left fielder can all bat from the right side against Bratt.
Mize has allowed 67 hits and 19 walks in 86⅔ innings. His last seven starts produced a 3.23 ERA, 1.03 WHIP, 36 strikeouts and seven walks in 39 innings. Bratt’s major-league sample is far smaller. His Triple-A performance included a .194 opponent average and 42 strikeouts against 12 walks in 44⅓ innings, but Arizona’s current rotation problems have required him to learn at the major-league level. Arizona’s Bratt-and-Kohl Drake rotation segment has produced an ERA above five with a fielding-independent mark above six.
Arizona’s current lineup includes deadline acquisition Nootbaar, with Carroll and Perdomo at the top and Marte and Arenado in the middle.
TOKYO’S CLUTCH INDEX — RUNNER ON THIRD WITH LESS THAN 2 OUTS
Team | OPS | MLB rank |
|---|---|---|
SDP | .846 | 10 |
ARI | .812 | 15 |
San Diego receives a small positive situational adjustment because its right-handed middle order projects well against Bratt with runners in scoring position.
Ranks are curved to a 1–30 scale, with 1 best and 30 worst.
Category | SDP | ARI |
|---|---|---|
Starting pitcher ERA + WHIP composite | Mize: 4 | Bratt: 26 |
Bullpen last 10 days ERA + WHIP | 10 | 18 |
Lineup last 10 days runs + wOBA | 19 | 7 |
Overall matchup composite | 8 | 15 |
Mize’s 2.70 ERA and 0.99 WHIP place him near the top of the eligible starting-pitcher pool. Bratt’s small sample and 5.23 ERA place him near the bottom quarter despite his excellent Triple-A numbers.
Arizona receives the better recent-lineup ranking after winning five of six entering Tuesday and scoring five runs in the series opener. San Diego entered the series on an eight-of-nine run before its offense was held to one run Monday.
Best straight-win probability: San Diego, 61.8%.
Best price-adjusted wager: San Diego first-five moneyline with ties pushing at -175 or better.
Best full-game side: San Diego moneyline at -150 or better.
Projected first five: San Diego 3.0, Arizona 1.8.
Projected final: San Diego 5.3, Arizona 3.8.
