Manchester United vs Chelsea Analysis

Chelsea travels to Manchester United on Thursday looking to cement their top-four place this season with a first road win at Old Trafford in almost a decade, and put a full eight points between themselves and Arsenal in fourth.

Manchester United, meanwhile, is in absolute freefall right now with their only victory over their last six games coming via a late Ronaldo winner against bottom placed Norwich almost two weeks ago.

Chelsea Excellent on the Road in 2022

It’s been nine straight wins now for Chelsea on the road as they head into Old Trafford on Thursday night and while that’s impressive in and of itself, it’s been the manner in which those victories have came for Chelsea which has been most standout.

The Blues have outscored opponents 23-to-5 on the road over their last seven road games in all and are on absolute fire right now away from home, ranking as the best road team in the Premier League as a whole since March 1st.

United Exposed Against Elite Teams

While Ralf Rangnick looks to see out his time in charge of the club by trying to continue to improve this struggling defense, it’s been an uphill battle for the German since his arrival in Manchester as United have been absolutely woeful at the back this season, especially against the more elite teams in the league.

Manchester United already ranks bottom-half in the league this season in terms of overall goals allowed to opponents, giving up 1.59 goals per game on average, but this rises to a massive 3.00 goals per game when playing against sides currently in the top four.

Manchester United vs Chelsea Prediction

While Chelsea would no doubt like to break their recent winning drought in the red half of Manchester, for all intents and purposes, they have little to play for here with Champions League qualification all but assured this season and they look ahead towards their big May 14th showdown against Liverpool in the FA Cup final.

Because of that we’re going to avoid the side here and concentrate on the total instead.

While this United defense has continued to look poor over recent months, Rangnick has nevertheless looked for continued improvement week on week for this team and that was no more evident than against Arsenal at the weekend.

Both Jadon Sancho and Cristiano Ronaldo were involved in tracking back on defense and getting tackles in that game, Sancho regaining possession a record ten times in that game also despite the loss, and it shows what Rangnick’s philsophy is in regards to this team.

While it hasn’t always worked for them, it’s clear the direction he wants to go in with this club and because of that we’re taking the under 2.5 goals here on Thursday in a game Chelsea may well just go through the motions in as well.
