Lille vs Chelsea Analysis

Lille was competitive in that first leg three weeks ago and made Chelsea uncomfortable in parts, averaging almost twice as many goal attempts as the home side in that one, but were found wanting in terms of overall finishing quality.

Chelsea has won each of the last three head-to-head’s against Lille, scoring exactly two goals across each game.

Turmoil and Off-Field Drama for Chelsea

It’s been a difficult week for the European champions. The British government has stepped in with massive sanctions against Russian owner Roman Abramovich freezing all of his assets in the UK, which also includes Chelsea.

As of today, Chelsea has been given a special license to operate with restrictions until May 31st, but with no player transfers, no merchandise or ticket sales, an imposed travel budget and no new contracts for any of the current players, it definitely hangs a huge cloud over the whole operation at Chelsea Football Club right now, including the players.

Lille Looking to Snap Historic Trends

After their epic French Ligue 1 title run last season where Lille edged out PSG by just a single point, it’s been pretty much a season to forget for the home side this year.

The French champions are currently down in sixth position, outside of a European place, and have won just two of their last five games overall across all competitions.

However, Lille will attempt to become the first side since the 2018-19 season to progress despite holding a two-goal deficit from the first leg. That will be easier said than done as Lille have failed to score a single goal in any of their last four meetings against a Thomas Tuchel-led side.

Lille vs Chelsea Prediction

Despite all of Chelsea’s off-field issues at the moment, on the field they’ve continued to get the job done and Thomas Tuchel has done a tremendous job of sheltering the team so far in terms of performances and results away from the media.

How long that will continue to go on for is anybody’s guess, especially domestically, but in terms of European competition, this trip may well provide something of a welcome reprieve for this Chelsea squad with everything that’s going on for them back in England.

Lille will have to attack Chelsea at some point in this game and with the pace of players like Ziyech, Mount, Pulisic and Havertz for Chelsea, pushing forward will likely leave Lille severely exposed at the back with space for Chelsea to run onto.

With Chelsea not needing a win here we’re getting decent odds on the outright market in this one, and it presents decent value as well as Lille will be forced to press high in this game at some point and likely get caught in a swift counter-attack by Chelsea which has been a hallmark under Tuchel.

Take Chelsea to win outright (-110) on Wednesday.
