Toronto Maple Leafs vs St Louis Blues Analysis

The Leafs improved to 32-13-3 after beating the Pittsburgh Penguins 4-1 at home on Thursday night. Meanwhile the Blues suffered a setback in a 3-2 overtime loss against the Canadiens at the Bell Centre. The Leafs won a 6-5 shootout in St Louis in their only head-to-head meeting on January 15th.

Leafs Win Seventh-Straight at Home

The Toronto Maple Leafs won their second straight game overall and 7th straight at home against the Penguins. Toronto scored a goal 21 seconds into the contest and never looked back in the 4-1 victory. Auston Matthews scored a goal and collected a helper, giving him 59 points and 33 goals on the season. Goalie Jack Campbell made a season high 45 saves, improving to 23-7-3 with 2.34 goals against average and .924 save percentage on the season. Backup goalie Petr Mrazek is 6-3 on the year with a 2.95 GAA and .899 save percentage.

The Maple Leafs score the 4th most goals (3.60) per game and allow the 5th least with only 2.66 goals a game from their opponents. The Leafs have the #1 power play in the league, while ranking 6th in penalty kill.

Singing The Blue In Montreal

The St Louis Blues watched their two game winning streak come to an end in a deflating overtime loss at the Bell Centre in Montreal. Robert Thomas and Pavel Buchnevich both netted goals for St Louis in the defeat. Goalie Ville Husso stopped 27 shots and has gone 11-3-2 for the season with a .937 save percentage and 1.91 goals against average. His alternare Jordan Binnington is 11-10-3 with a gawdy 3.35 GAA and .898 save percentage.

The Blues score the 5th most goals a game (3.48) and give up the 8th least goals (2.75) to their rivals. They own the leagues 2nd best power play and 5th best penalty kill.

Toronto Maple Leafs vs St Louis Blues Prediction

This is going to be a great game between two evenly matched teams. Both teams are top five in scoring and we have the top two power play units in the league. Seven of the last nine Leafs games have cleared this total. We saw 11 total goals in the first head-to-head matchup with Campbell and Binnington in net. While the starting goalies aren’t official yet, we will go over 6.5 tonight regardless. If one or two inferior goalies start, that will be a bonus.

Hockey Betting 101 | What is the Puckline?

The puckline is hockey’s version of the point spread. When betting on the puckline, the favorite is -1.5 goals on the spread, with the underdog at +1.5 goals. Betting on the favorite requires your team to win its game by two or more goals. Conversely, betting on the underdog at +1.5 means that your team can either win the game or lose by one goal, and your ticket will still cash.

Since the majority of hockey betting is built around the moneyline, casual bettors might be turned off by laying larger prices with the top teams in the league. Instead of laying -200 or -250 on a strong favorite, a more attractive option might be laying -1.5 goals at a more reasonable price point. Conversely, it can be hard to pull the trigger on a +200 underdog that’s expected to lose their game over 60% of the time. Well, it gets a little easier to put your money on them if you’re getting a +1.5 goal head start.
