The atmosphere, the ceremony, and the adrenaline all favor an up-tempo first period, with the defending champs likely to trade chances rather than lock things down right away.
On the other side, the Blackhawks enter with a young, motivated roster eager to spoil the celebration. Chicago’s top offensive players will be looking to make immediate impressions, and their speed up front should test a Panthers blue line missing key shutdown personnel. This game has all the ingredients for early action, including emotion, offensive skill, defensive gaps, and two goaltenders who may be left out to dry in the opening twenty minutes. Of the three opening night matchups, this one is expected to the most competitive. One team is a heavy favorite in each of the other two games. This line is closer to a pick'em. As of this writing, the Avalanche are slight favorites. I feel that's providing us with fair value on the Kings. While the Avs are likely going to be really good again, LA should also be strong. The well-coached Kings have a defensive structure which makes life difficult for their opponents. They don't necessarily have the star power that Colorado does but the Kings tend to receive production from every line combination. They're not flashy but it works for them, at least in the regular season.
Last season LA had 105 points. Colorado had 101. This season, the Avs are projected to finish with 103.5 points but the Kings aren't far behind. Draft Kings has their projected number of points at 98.5. Both teams are very tough to beat on home ice. The Kings were 31-6-4 here last season, which was the best home ice record in the entire league. The home team has also won five straight in the series. As slight underdogs, I like the Kings' chances of making it six straight.

First, I want to say, I am looking to bet Overs in the 1st week of the NHL. Unlike the NFL, where it takes longer for offenses to gel, the NHL is an over league early. This is not a blind betting strategy, as obviously games go Under, but I love the over in this particular matchup. First off, I think the Avs and the Kings end up in the top 10 and likely the top 5 for goals scored. This is not the Kings team of old, where they play slow, heavy hockey and win 3-2 games. We saw them start to transition last year to a faster, more offensive minded hockey team. They ended up in the middle of the pack in goals scored per game, at 3 GPG. The Avs, we know can score and they have been for years now. Last season, they were in the top 1 at 3.4 GPG and I think they get slightly more than that this season. I also think both these teams will regress defensively from last year. Plus in their last 10 matchups against each other, they have score 6 or more 8 times.
