Chicago Bears vs Houston Texans Preview

The Houston Texans travel to Soldier Field for an inter-conference matchup with the Chicago Bears on Sunday afternoon. The Bears fell to 1-1 after being run over by the Green Bay Packers and losing 27-10 in Week 2. The Texans now sit at 0-1-1 after losing 16-9 in Denver against the Broncos. The last time these teams met was in 2020 and the Bears prevailed with a 36-7 victory.

Home Sweat Home

The Chicago Bears won their season opener 19-10 at Soldier Field against the San Francisco 49ers, only to fall 27-10 at Lambeau Field on Sunday. This team didn’t have high expectations coming into the season with a first-year head coach and young quarterback, so they need to get wins at home against the like of the Texans. However, they are dealing with some key injuries especially on the offensive line where they are already missing four players.

Justin Fields is elusive and explosive but still inexperienced and with a banged up O-Line we may be looking at a heavy dose of the run and some players prop under at the quarterback and receiver positions. The Bears should have success against the Texans on the defensive side of the ball as their pass rush disrupted Aaron Rodgers last week.

Lovie Smith Faces Familiar Foe

Houston Texans first year head coach Lovie Smith returns to his old stomping grounds at Soldier Field to face the Chicago Bears. The Texans have been one of the league’s worst teams in recent years, but they did manage to tie the Indianapolis Colts 20-20 in Week 1. They lost on the road in Week 2 but stayed within one score as they lost 16-9 to the Denver Broncos.

The Texans have injury concerns of their own as nine players have already been ruled out for Sunday. Most notably, they received good news as starting quarterback Davis Mills is now probable with a thumb injury. Smith was quoted saying he wanted to get rookie running back Dameon Pierce more involved and did so in Week 2.

The Houston defense has done a great job limiting the opposition thus far, and based on the competition, a low scoring game is probably on the horizon.

Chicago Bears vs Houston Texans Prediction

With two young quarterbacks and two defenses that can hold their own at Soldier Field, this game seems designed for some player prop unders. Davis Mills’ passing total is set at 212.5 yards. He cleared that total at home with 240 yards in Week 1 but fell short with 177 on the road in Week 2. This seems to be a trend dating back to last season as he went over this number in five of seven home games but fell short in four of six on the road.

Now enter the Bears defense, they currently rank seventh against the pass and dead last against the run. Smith and the Texans will be looking to take advantage on the ground which could limit Davis even further. There isn’t supposed to be horrible weather at Soldier Field but it isn’t the dome where Davis seems to thrive.

I’m fully expecting both sides to play it close to vest while leaning on the running game and defense. Let’s look for the road trend to continue with Davis Mills and take passing yards under 212.5. Play Davis Mills UNDER 212.5 passing yards, currently available at -115 at DraftKings.
