One of the most highly-anticipated fights of 2022 is finally here. Charles Oliveira takes on Islam Makhachev for the undisputed lightweight championship of the world. This is a fight the die-hard fans have been begging for, as these guys offer so many potential outcomes.
Do Bronx
Charles Oliveira is one of the greatest underdog stories in the history of the sport. He has been repeatedly counted out but has answered the call at every turn. This is not the first time Oliveira has competed for the championship as an underdog, as he defended the belt against Dustin Poirier as a +130 ‘dog last December.
Oliveira won’t be defending the championship as he missed weight his last time out when taking on Justin Gaethje and was stripped of the belt. Oliveira has a chance to become a two-time champion while Islam looks to follow in the steps of Khabib Nurmagomedov and give Dagestan another champion at 155 pounds.
Charles Oliveira is a lion of a man and competitor whose heart can never be questioned. Oliveira has put together the most remarkable run the division has ever seen and one of the best in the history of mixed martial arts as he’s not just defeated but finished a who’s-who of the sport.
Oliveira has the most finishes in UFC history, as he’s a threat everywhere the fight goes. Take him down, and he’ll attempt to choke you out. Strike with him, and he’ll oblige with some of the nastiest offensive striking we’ve seen.
Oliveira will come out guns blazing to try and force Makhachev into a mistake early. Oliveira will be hoping Makachev strikes with him or times a lousy takedown attempt that gets him caught in a nasty guillotine choke that nobody can escape.
Eagle Prodigy
Makachev has been a front-runner his entire career and protege of former pound-for-pound great Khabib Nurmagomedov. Makhachev has been dominant, winning ten-straight fights while being a -300 or higher favorite in each fight.
The young kid on the block at AKA has arrived as the gym believes they have the next champion on their hands. Makachev is a good size for the division and has some of the best wrestling and offensive ground game in mixed martial arts history, as he attacks from every angle while on top. His striking has developed to a level of competency that allows him to feel comfortable in striking situations.
Makhachev lacks top-level fight experience, as his best win comes against fringe top-15 contender Dan Hooker, who took the fight on short notice and had no answer for the ground game of Islam.
The deeper this fight goes, the better Makhachev’s chance of winning, as he’ll be the offensive party in the grappling while the BJJ of Oliveira can get nullified with the sweat factor.
Charles Oliveira vs Islam Makhachev Best Bet
Charles Oliveira isn’t scared of Makachev or the energy he and his star-studded team brings. The moment isn’t too big for him as he’s been under the bright lights competing for championships. Oliveira has a massive edge on the feet, and his BJJ skills can create submission opportunities when Makhachev uses his rappelling. In my opinion, this is a 50/50 fight with all the edges I look for in favor of Do Bronx. My recommendation is on Oliveira inside the distance (+170).
