Toronto Blue Jays vs Baltimore Orioles Analysis

The Baltimore Orioles travel north of the border to begin a crucial three game series with the Toronto Blue Jays on Monday evening from the Rogers Centre.

The Blue Jays dropped two of three home games this weekend against the Cleveland Guardians. Meanwhile the Orioles also lost two of three over the weekend in Tampa Bay against the Rays. These teams are now separated by only a few games in America League Wild Card standings.

The young righty Kyle Bradish gets the nod for Baltimore, while Toronto sends the struggling southpaw Yusei Kikuchi to the mound. First pitch is scheduled for 7:07 PM EST/4:07 PST.

Jays Cling To Wildcard Lead

The Toronto Blue Jays came out of the gates hot after the All-Star break and built a lead as the top Wild Card team. However the Jays have now lost seven of their last ten games and can feel the Baltimore Orioles amongst others breathing down their backs.

The potent Toronto lineup was limited to only four runs in a three game series including a 7-2 loss on Sunday to the Cleveland Guardians. Last week’s AL Player of the Week, Kevin Gausman was rocked for nine hits and five runs across 4.2 innings of work.

Lourdes Gurriel Jr went 3 for 4 with a double out of the leadoff spot. Toronto currently owns a 61-52 record, still good for the top Wild Card spot with a ridiculous log jam behind them. Yusei Kikuchi will take his turn in the rotation in the series opener, but the Blue Jays can’t be excited about it.

He has 4-6 record on the season to go along with a bloated 5.13 ERA and 1.49 WHIP. Kikuchi has also given up 18 blasts in only 79 innings of work. He is 0-2 with a 9.00 ERA in two starts against the Orioles.

Birds of a Feather

The Baltimore Orioles playoff aspirations took a couple of steps back as they were only able to score three combined runs in back-to-back losses to the Tampa Bay Rays.

On Sunday they were almost on the wrong side of history as Drew Rasmussen came three outs shy of a perfect game against them. Jorge Mateo doubled to break up the perfect game and later scored on a wild pitch to break up the shutout.

Jordan Lyles gave up four runs on five hits in 4.1 innings while striking out nine. The loss ended the season series with the Rays on top 10-9. It’s shows just how far the O’s have come as they ended last season 1-18 against the Rays.

Regardless, Baltimore currently sits only 1.5 games behind Tampa Bay for the third and final Wild Card spot. Kyle Bradish will be on the bump to open the series against Toronto.

Bradish is 1-4 on the season with a scary 6.42 ERA and 1.62 WHIP. In two starts against the Blue Jays, he is 0-1 with a 7.45 ERA. He’s only lasted 9.2 innings and gave up 14 hits.

Andy Lang Picks

Toronto Blue Jays vs Baltimore Orioles Prediction

The Toronto Blue Jays enter this contest as favorites with a -165 money line, while the Baltimore Orioles sit at +140 with a game total of 9. This is a critical game between two teams immersed in a heated American League Wild Card race.

We went 2-0-1 to the over in article plays when these two teams met in Baltimore last week. A rain out was the only thing that stopped the sweep and I don’t see another direction to look here. In six head-to-head meetings we have had totals of 11, 11, 12, 12, 13, & 13. Very consistent.

We also have two starting pitchers who simply cannot be trusted and both have had been hit hard by the opposition multiple times. I’m not concerned about the Jays recent hitting struggles as this presents the perfect bounce back spot. Let’s ride the over in this series til the wheels come off.

Prediction: Over 9 Runs Scored -120
