San Francisco Giants vs Arizona Diamondbacks Analysis

The Arizona Diamondbacks play the San Francisco Giants at Oracle Park in the rubber match of a three game series. After getting a 4-3 win on Monday, the D-Backs lost 13-0 on Tuesday night.

Gallen Gives Diamondbacks a Chance

D-Backs starter Zac Gallen has good numbers for the season with a sub-4.00 ERA. But when you take a deeper dive into his numbers and recent starts, I won’t be running to the window to wager on the Arizona right-hander anytime soon.

April and May were good months, but the wheels have come off from June forward. Gallen’s ERA for June is 5.26 over five starts, and for his two outings in July it is 5.73. The long ball has been his downfall over the last couple of months, as he’s given up at least one home run in eight of his last nine starts.

The Diamondbacks consistency at the plate has been a problem this year, as they’re just 26th in team OPS at .684, and 28th in team batting average at .223. The pitching hasn’t been much better with a 24th best team ERA of 4.38 and a 1.33 WHIP, and one of the worst bullpens in baseball.

So how is this team 39-49 going into the All-Star Break? Mainly by dialing long distance and blasting home runs, with 97 taters this year – tied for 12th in MLB with the Angels.

We should also give some credit to manager Torey Lovullo, who was named Manager of the Year in 2017 when Arizona went 93-69 and won the Wild Card game. If this team had a better record – and the Padres weren’t playing so well under Bob Melvin – he’d be a stronger contender for MOY this season.

Bullpen Blues for Giants

It looks like a bullpen game for the Giants and John Brebbia will be the opener. If this game was earlier in the year – when this group was pitching well – I’d probably at least lean to San Fran in this matchup. However, the firemen have dropped from the top 1/3rd to the bottom 1/3rd in bullpen ERA.

The Giants are playing decent baseball with a 42-40 record and are still in the running for the last wildcard spot, 4.5 games behind San Diego, but after a 107-win season in 2021, we knew that negative regression for wins was just a matter of time. However, they’ll have to play (and pitch) a lot better going down the stretch to contend for a playoff spot.

Bullpen games haven’t worked out that well for San Francisco this year, and Zac Gallen has also struggled recently. That doesn’t bode well going against a Giants team that just scored 13 runs the day before.

Mid-Season MLB Handicapping Tip

Every so often we need to check our assumptions and make sure they’re accurate, so we can make more profitable wagers. The three factors for the Rockies are good examples of this.

Although the Rox and Coors Field have the reputations of being a high-scoring team and park, it hasn’t always played out that way in 2022. The All-Star Break is a great time to reflect on your 1st half wagers to make sure your betting assumptions are still valid.

San Francisco Giants vs Arizona Diamondbacks Prediction

Arizona will have seen some of the Giants’ relievers Monday or Tuesday, and should have better success at the plate the second time around.

San Fran should be able to get at least one or two runs versus one of the worst bullpens in MLB, plus two or three runs against starter Zac Gallen.

The run total opened at 8.5 and Wednesday morning has dropped to eight. This number seems a little low when I look at all these factors, and that’s why I’ll take the full game over.

Prediction: Over 8 Total Runs Scored
