Arizona Diamondbacks vs San Francisco Giants Analysis

The San Francisco Giants take on the Arizona Diamondbacks in the second of a three game series. The Snakes took game one Monday night 7-0 behind an excellent performance from Merrill Kelly, who went 8.0 shutout innings with seven strikeouts and allowed just three hits.

Tonight it’s a battle of southpaws with Carlos Rodon going against Tyler Gilbert, first pitch is scheduled for 9:40 Eastern / 6:40 Pacific time.

Rodon Looks to Rally Giants

San Francisco kept it close last night through five innings only down 2-0, but the wheels came off in the sixth and eighth innings.

The bullpen blew up again, and that’s not a good sign for a team who wants to make a playoff run. Their relievers have major issues as their collective ERA is now worse than Arizona’s bad pen.

On a more positive note, staff ace Carlos Rodon takes the hill tonight. Rodon has performed like the Giants thought he would when they signed him from the White Sox.

In 19 starts and 110 innings, the southpaw has an 8-5 record with a 2.95 ERA, a solid 1.14 WHIP with 138 strikeouts. In 16 of his 19 starts, he’s allowed just three earned runs or less, and his control has been excellent, allowing just five home runs and 37 walks – that’s just over three free passes per nine innings.

Diamondbacks Indecisive With Gilbert

Arizona’s Tyler Gilbert was supposed to start Monday night, but was moved back to tonight. He’s spent much of this season with the AAA Reno Aces, and has struggled at both the minor and major league levels.

In 11 minor league games, 10 starts and 44.0 innings, he has an ERA of 7.57, a 1.80 WHIP and just 26 strikeouts. His numbers with the parent club aren’t much better in seven games, six starts and 30.1 innings with a 5.34 ERA, but a respectable 1.25 WHIP.

Although he’s pitched better with Arizona in his last three starts – allowing no home runs and just one walk in each outing – long balls and free passes have been an issue in his games this season. He’s given up 18 bombs and 33 walks with both clubs this season.

Arizona Diamondbacks vs San Francisco Giants Prediction

San Fran has a big edge with starting pitching, plus they’re in the top 10 OPS versus left-handed pitchers while the D-Backs are in the bottom 10. Both bullpens are in the bottom seven in ERA, and I don’t like trusting either of these bad pens to hold leads late in games.

Full game moneyline price is expensive, and the 1st 5 innings run line price is better and less risky from a pitching standpoint. That’s why I’ll take the Giants on the 1st 5 innings run line.

Prediction: Giants 1st 5 Innings Run Line (-0.5)
