Detroit Tigers vs Cleveland Guardians Analysis
The Cleveland Guardians and Detroit Tigers begin a three game series from Comerica Park on Tuesday evening. The Tigers dropped three of four home games against the Tampa Bay Rays over the weekend. Meanwhile the Guardians split four home games with the Houston Astros.
Reliever turned starter Tyler Alexander gets the nod for Detroit, while Cleveland ace Shane Bieber toes the rubber for the Guardians. First pitch is scheduled for 7:10 PM EST/4:10 PST.
Guardians Look To Improve On The Road
The Cleveland Guardians improved to 56-52 on the season with a 1-0 victory over the Houston Astros on Sunday afternoon. Triston McKenzie was brilliant with eight innings of shutout baseball.
He struck out eight and only allowed two hits and a walk. Backup catcher Luke Maile provided the games only run with a solo-blast, his first long ball of the season.
The Guardians currently sit one game behind the Minnesota Twins in the American League Central and two games away from the third and final Wild Card spot. Cleveland is middle of the pack in scoring as they rank 16th in runs scored. They rely heavily on their star slugger Jose Ramirez, who has a .284 batting average to go along with 21 home runs.
Shane Bieber draws the start on Tuesday, he is having another strong season with only 50 runs allowed in 124.2 innings while striking out 126. Bieber has a .382 expected slugging percentage, 3.54 xERA to go along with a gaudy 25.1 strikeout percentage. This means hitters are constantly striking out and making weak contact against Bieber making it difficult to score runs against him.
Tigers Tamed Against Tampa Bay
The Detroit Tigers record fell to 43-67 after getting blanked 7-0 on Sunday against the Tampa Bay Rays. Matt Manning got things started on the right foot with seven scoreless innings while scattering four hits and three walks.
All seven runs were scored in the 9th inning as Gregory Soto gave up five runs and Jason Foley gave up two. Riley Greene and Kody Clemens each had a double. They lost three of four against Tampa and are now only 6-12 since the All-Star break.
The Tigers have the American Leagues second worst record as the Oakland Athletics are the only team with a worse record. Their lineup is also one the worst in baseball, they rank dead last in runs scored, OPS, ISO and home runs.
They have only managed to score 15 runs in their last five games. The Tigers reluctantly turn to Tyler Alexander who has had a rough time, giving up 22 runs in only 42.1 innings of work. He also has a bloated xERA of 4.87 and expected slugging percentage of .464.
Detroit Tigers vs Cleveland Guardians Prediction
The Cleveland Guardians are heavy road favorites with a money line of -190, while the Detroit Tigers sit at +160 with a total of 7.5. The real mismatch in this game is Bieber against this horrendous Tigers lineup.
He did struggle against them in the last head-to-head matchup, but dominated in the other two outings this season. He has held them to 8 total runs in 20+ innings of work.
What holds me back from going Guardians run line is their struggles hitting left-handed pitching. They aren’t just bad against southpaws, they are one the league’s worst across the board.
I see a close lower scoring game with Bieber and the Guardians coming out on top. Let’s get a little creative and take Shane Bieber “to record a win” at +100 odds.
