Blue Jays vs Astros Analysis

After playing a three game series last week at Minute Maid Park, the Toronto Blue Jays and Houston Astros meet again at Rogers Centre on Friday night.

It was a hard fought series as the Jays prevailed in two of three games with each game being decided by one run. Both teams picked up a victory yesterday to complete a 3-1 series victory.

Yusei Kikuchi gets the nod for Toronto while the Astros turn to Jose Urquidy. First pitch is scheduled for 7:07 PM EST.

Astros Aim to Even the Score

The Houston Astros won the last three games of a a four game series against the Texas Rangers to improve to 10-9 on the season. Justin Verlander was lights out yet again as he led Houston to an 3-2 victory on Thursday afternoon.

Verlander threw 7 innings while allowing only one earned run on four hits and no walks while striking out eight. Kyle Tucker only needed one at bat to be the offensive standout. He belted what proved to be a game winning two run blast in the top of the 8th.

The Astros have gotten off to a slow start as a team at the plate. They rank 21st the league with only .624 OPS. Jose Urquidy will be looked upon to continue the winning streak.

Urquidy is 1-1 with a 5.52 ERA and 1.36 WHIP on the season. He threw 5.2 innings while allowing two earned runs in a no-decision against Toronto last week.

Jays Protect the North

The Blue Jays stay in Toronto after edging out the Boston Red Sox 1-0 yesterday to win the series 3-1. Alek Manoah continued the incredible start to his season by throwing seven shutout innings with three hits, one walk and seven strikeouts.

Jordan Romano picked his American League leading 9th save of the season. Alejandro Kirk drove in the only run of the game. He was also the only player to have a multi-hit game from either side.

The Blue Jays offense leads the league in home runs, but they still have room to improve as they rank 9th in OPS. Yusei Kikuchi will make his 4th start of the season, none of which lasting past the 5th inning.

Kikuchi only lasted 3.2 innings in his last start against the Houston Astros while allowing four runs, two of them earned. Walks have set the southpaw back, he had five in last start to make 10 on the season in only 12 innings pitched.

Blue Jays vs Astros Prediction

We should have another close game between these teams with the money line set at -120 for Toronto and +100 for Houston and total of 8.5. Feels like a tough spot to pick a side with the starting pitching and bullpens being about a wash.

The Jays do have an edge in hitting and while the Houston bats are struggling they are still a dangerous lineup. They are also a veteran lineup that’s smart enough to sit back, take pitches and inevitably draw walks off Kikuchi.

Each team does have a few sluggers that tee off on the opposing starter. Bo Bichette and Vladimir Guerrero combine for 7 for 16 with a homerun each against Urquidy.

Against Kikuchi, Yordan Alvarez is 6 for 20 with two homeruns while Alex Bregman is 6 for 17 with a homer. It’s been under city in Major League Baseball thus far, but this one sure has the feel of an over.

Prediction: Over 8.5 Total Runs Scored
