Notre Dame Football Preview 2023: Notre Dame Picks for Betting

I’m rooting for Marcus Freeman. Despite some bad-looking losses (Marshall, favored by 20.5, Stanford, favored by 16.5), Notre Dame football finished with nine wins, including an upset over Clemson.

Recruiting is up, which is good for the long term. What’s a realistic goal for this season?

Notre Dame Football Predictions: AREAS TO WATCH

QB play should be fine, as Sam Hartman has plenty of experience. I’d like to see a turnover reduction from him. The run game exceeded my ’22 expectations.

The floor may be last year’s 4.7 per carry, as they have some good options. Losing TE Mayer hurts, but the Irish usually produce solid players at this position. Both the coordinator and OL coach are new but their respective resumes are decent.

It seems the offense should perform close to last year’s results. Defensive depth is decent but their sack specialist (Foskey) is gone as a 2nd round pick.

I don’t see any reason to deviate from last year’s numbers, which were decent, but not overpowering. The kicking game features a former South Florida player who has a mediocre track record.

The new coordinator is also a bit of a downgrade, so this is one area that could cost the team a win or two. To summarize, my keys are QB turnovers, trusting the pass catchers, and hoping the special team unit does not regress too much.

Notre Dame 2023 Predictions, Notre Dame Football Schedule:

Game #3 is at North Carolina State, who will test Notre Dame’s offense. Hartman has decent experience facing this defense while at Wake, so this game should be interesting. Ohio State beat Notre Dame 21-10 last year.

This year Notre Dame is the host. Games at Duke (their Head Coach was a defensive coordinator here) and then at Louisville could be close as well.

Notre Dame hosts USC on 10/14. PAC 12 teams have a way of screening themselves out of the playoff chase, and this game might eliminate the loser.

The Fighting Irish lost 38-27 a year ago but has won five of the last six at home. Pitt likes to put pressure on opposing QB’s but can be susceptible to big plays based on their scheme.

With Notre Dame rested, a win is expected. The rematch with Clemson is at their place. The last two games are vs. Wake (another Notre Dame full week off before this one) and at Stanford, where they seek revenge.

Notre Dame Football Bottom Line:

6-2, with a shot at 9-3 if they go 3-1 in games at North Carolina State (tossup), at Duke, at Louisville and home to USC. I don’t think more than 9 wins is possible due to my questions about their special team play.

I’d set the goal for Notre Dame football at 9-3, plus a bowl win. With improved recruiting, that would set the program up for continued success.

Notre Dame Football HANDICAPPING TIP:

My 80% eight year spread run ended in 2019, and I’m 8-9 the last four years (1-1 with the new staff, plus a bowl win).

I’m thinking dog only in the North Carolina State game, and a critical check of Central Michigan’s defense prior to that game on 9/16, where the points could be attractive.

I would lean going with Notre Dame or passing the game if installed as a dog to USC.
