Northern Illinois vs Miami OH Analysis

The Miami OH Redhawks travel to DeKalb, Illinois to take on the Northern Illinois Huskies with both teams looking to salvage what’s been a pretty disappointing season so far.

Miami has lost three of its last four games heading into Wednesday’s matchup, with a 16-point blowout loss against the Ohio Bobcats being the most recent blemish on their resume.

Northern Illinois won its last matchup as a short road favorite against Western Michigan last week, but that was just the Huskies’ second FBS win of the season thus far.

Historically, the two teams have been very hard to separate, with the Redhawks owning the slight 10-9 series advantage and capturing the last two meetings (in 2018 and 2019).

Redhawks Scramble To Remain Bowl Eligible

Miami still has a shot at becoming bowl eligible, but needs to win both of its final games to do so. That may be easier said than done after the poor performance that the Redhawks’ defense put on last week against Ohio.

The Bobcats earned 556 yards of total offense, including 362 yards through the air. Miami is No. 105 in the country in passing yards allowed.

The good news for the Redhawks is that Northern Illinois has really struggled to throw the ball without QB Rocky Lombardi.

He’s listed as questionable to play in this contest but has missed six games this season. In his absence, Nevan Cremascoli has completed just 21-of-50 passes against Central and Western Michigan, throwing three interceptions last week against the Broncos.

Credel Gets Huskies Moving

While the passing game appears to be a battle of weakness vs weakness (NIU can’t throw the ball and Miami can’t defend the pass), the running game will be a battle of strength vs strength.

Miami’s defense is allowing just 3.3 yards per carry. That unit will be put to the test against Huskies’ RB Jaiden Credel, who is coming off a 36-carry workhorse performance last week where he earned 136 yards.

Northern Illinois vs Miami OH Prediction

Miami has struggled with teams that can open them up through the air this season, but that simply isn’t who this Northern Illinois team is. The Huskies are 87th in the country in yards per pass attempt this year, and part of that is with Lombardi (a former Big Ten starter) at the helm. They’ve been much worse without him.

With Cremascoli continuing to struggle and the Redhawks’ stout run defense likely being able to slow down Credel, we believe Miami OH takes another step towards bowl eligibility here with a win and cover on the road against Northern Illinois on Wednesday.

Prediction: Miami OH Moneyline
