New Mexico vs San Diego State Analysis

The San Diego State Aztecs claimed their fourth win in five games last weekend with a 43-27 victory over San Jose State in Snapdragon Stadium.

The Aztecs dominated the Spartans in total offense in that game, rolling over them with a 200+ yard differential. That’s been a theme for this San Diego State team of late as they rank top-25 in the country over their last three starts in total opponent yards allowed.

New Mexico, meanwhile, is coming off its seventh-straight loss against Air Force last week, getting run over by a 35-3 margin in that one.

The New Mexico offense continues to be a huge concern this season as the Lobos have averaged just 11.8 points per game on the year so far, the lowest offensive scoring mark out of any team in the country this season.

San Diego State has won 28 of 43 meetings between the two sides historically, but more importantly, has won all eight of their most recent meetings since 2009.

Bye Week Helps Aztecs Gain Uptick In Defense

Since their bye week in mid-October, the Aztecs have been on a roll defensively, registering 4.5 sacks per game on average and 8.5 tackles for loss per game.

San Diego State is allowing 44.5 rushing yards per game and have forced 2.3 turnovers per game during this recent run.

Offensive Issues Not Getting Better For New Mexico

New Mexico’s offense is scoring 11.8 points per game this season (worst in the nation), and the concerning part is that they are getting worse. Over their last three games, the Lobos are scoring 7.3 points per game.

Most of those offensive issues for New Mexico stem from a passing attack that has generated just 73.7 yards per game over their last three starts, which is 128th in the country. New Mexico’s quarterbacks have only thrown for three touchdowns all season.

Head coach Danny Gonzales fired offensive coordinator Derek Wareheim last month, but that move certainly hasn’t provided any kind of benefit.

New Mexico vs San Diego State Prediction

New Mexico looks like a team that has simply mailed it in this season, and despite the high line here, we can only look towards the San Diego State Aztecs to win and cover here on Friday.

Air Force required just three plays and 1:21 on the clock to go in for their first touchdown on their opening drive last week, and it only got worse from there.

Those serious issues on offense for the Lobos have now been compounded by an unwillingness on defense also as the season has wore on. That’s a dangerous combination when looking to bet on any team, even one receiving this many points in a conference matchup.

New Mexico is 0-6 against the spread in their last six conference home games. Take the San Diego State Aztecs to win and cover on the road here on Friday down in Albuquerque.

Prediction: San Diego State Aztecs -14.5
