Jesse Rodriguez vs Sunny Edwards Betting Analysis

Tremendous fight on Saturday night over in Glendale, Arizona as the two best flyweights on the planet clash in what should be a mouthwatering contest live over on DAZN this weekend.

Both Jesse Rodriguez and Sunny Edwards enter Saturday’s bout as WBO & IBF champions respectively, with an undefeated record between the pair as well, so we’re no doubt in for a high-stakes chess match in this one.

Sunny Edwards, the Englishman, is 20-0 (4 KO’s) and is largely known for having some of the best defensive technique in the entire sport, able to target opponents with pinpoint accuracy but rarely getting hit clean himself.

His opponent, Jesse ‘Bam’ Rodriguez, is known to be a far more formidable puncher, with seven stoppages in his last ten fights, but has enough high-pressure and countering skills of his own that he rarely has to rely on his power to win fights.

Jesse Rodriguez comes into this fight as the -235 favorite, with Sunny Edwards coming back at a +190.

Rodriguez’s Recovery Still An Unknown

Arguably 2022’s Fighter of the Year after running through super-flyweight greats Carlos Cuadras and Srisaket Sor Rungvisai within a few short months of one other, along with a competitive decision against an under-rated Israel Gonzalez as well, Jesse ‘Bam’ Rodriguez at only 23 years of age has already made a name for himself as one of the premier stars of the sport.

However, a broken jaw in his last fight against Cristian Gonzalez down at flyweight earlier this year has led to a longer than anticipated recovery time, requiring surgery on that jaw as well, and that has no doubt had an impact on his sparring preparation ahead of this fight.

Edwards Looking To Make A Big Statement On U.S. Soil

The brash Brit Sunny Edwards will be looking to make a huge statement in his first fight on U.S. soil this weekend, a fight that will have a heavily pro-Rodriguez crowd in attendance also.

That is unlikely to faze Edwards however who is one of the most outspoken fighters in the sport, and for good reason also, as the technically sound Englishman has put on a number of defensive clinics in the ring over the last couple of years.

That defensive wizardry will be put to the test in this one however as despite his solid resume, Edwards has never been in the ring with a fighter who provides as much sustained intelligent pressure as Jesse Rodriguez does.

Jesse Rodriguez vs Sunny Edwards Expert Prediction

This could potentially be one of the fights of the year on Saturday as despite this being Edwards’ biggest test to date, the same is also true of Rodriguez who even with his impressive wins against legends in Sor Rungvisai and Cuadras, has never faced an opponent at this level who is still currently in his prime.

The other issue for Rodriguez in this one is that stylistically, this has the potential to be a bad matchup for him, with Bam being at his absolute best when being able to pivot and counter overly aggressive fighters on the inside, something Lomachenko was also elite at.

That won’t be the case on Saturday however as Bam will have to be the one who instigates all the action in this one against a fighter in Edwards who specializes in lateral movement and playing defense, looking to counter opponents on the way in, and that’s something Rodriguez had a ton of difficulty in dealing with in his last fight against Cristian Gonzalez earlier this year, another fighter who just refused to engage.

Sunny Edwards definitely has the skills to expose Bam’s under-cooked footwork in this one, and it could well be a long night’s work for the San Antonio native come Saturday.

That said, even with all of Rodriguez’s difficulties in his last fight in trying to pin Gonzalez down, something that will be notched to an even higher level in this fight, two of the three judges had Rodriguez winning that fight by at least six rounds, and that hometown favoritism may well get him the nod once again in this one, especially when factoring in both where Edwards is from and his overall negative style in fights.

In what’s expected to be an extremely close fight, I’d rather take a piece of the +200 on offer for Edwards to win by decision than the -115 on Rodriguez, in a matchup I expect the Englishman to shine in on Saturday.

Play: Sunny Edwards by Decision/Technical Decision (+200)
