Jermall Charlo vs Thomas LaManna Betting Analysis
Former WBC world middleweight champion Jermall Charlo returns to action this Saturday night over in Las Vegas, Nevada as he takes on Thomas ‘Cornflake’ LaManna in the super-middleweight division.
Charlo, who was once a major PPV star, got stripped of his WBC title early last year after a prolonged bout of inactivity coupled with some reported mental health issues also.
Now at 35 years of age, Charlo is attempting another title run up at 168lbs, and a major fight against former champion and headline act for this card, Caleb Plant, in the very near future should he get past LaManna this weekend.
Books are certainly expecting that to happen with Jermall Charlo coming into this one as the massive -1300 favorite on Saturday, with ‘Cornflake’ LaManna coming back as a +700 underdog.
Big Fights Still In Reach For Charlo
Despite a lackluster last few years for Jermall Charlo overall, fighting just twice across the last four years and now with no title to boot, Charlo’s name nevertheless carries enough weight in boxing that he’s likely only one good win away from securing himself a huge title shot, with undisputed super-middleweight king Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez likely being top of that list.
That’s been a fight that’s been talked about for years at this point also, with many people surprised that it was actually Charlo’s twin brother, Jermell, who got the opportunity to fight Canelo rather than Jermall who had campaigned at a higher weight.
If Charlo can overcome the setbacks of the last few years however then he has potentially a huge 2025/2026 ahead of him.
LaManna Stresses He’s Now Better Than Ever
After suffering three losses in five fights during the mid-portion of 2021, Thomas LaManna admits he was at the lowest point of his career a few years ago.
The last of those losses came against current middleweight champion Erislandy Lara, who caught LaManna with some beautiful straight left hands in the opening round, the last of which closed the show with half of round 1 still to go.
Since then, LaManna has stressed he’s turned things around however, implementing a new regime and gaining confidence along with it, with the net result being a current nine-fight win streak.
Whether that will be enough to get the victory on Saturday against Jermall Charlo however is still unknown.
Jermall Charlo vs Thomas LaManna Expert Prediction
The move up to 168lbs will no doubt be a learning curve for Jermall Charlo who owned the height and reach advantage for the vast majority of his fights down at 154lbs and 160lbs.
LaManna comes in as the marginally taller fighter this weekend, and genuinely appears like a new man brimming with confidence, stating that he believes Charlo is 50% at best of the fighter that formerly ruled the roost down in the middleweight division.
Whether, that’s the case or not, 50% of Charlo may still be enough to beat LaManna on Saturday as the now more conservative Charlo really has turned into a terrific boxer-puncher at range, with one of his recent highlights being that near complete dismantling of an excellent Sergiy Derevyanchenko in Connecticut a few years ago.
While Charlo may struggle to reach that same height here on Saturday, a professional approach in this one should nonetheless get him the win, even in second gear as he showed against Jose Benavidez last time out.
Charlo certainly has the power to KO anybody on his day, but with five decisions across his last six fights, coupled with huge periods of inactivity and some mental health issues on top, he’ll likely be more cautious than usual this weekend, and opt for the routine win against LaManna in order to secure that Caleb Plant fight (should he win also) down the road later this year.
Josh Taylor vs Ekow Essuman Prediction: Jermall Charlo by Dec/Tech Dec (-130)
