2026 Boston College Football Preview and Win Total Prediction
It’s hard to find too many positives during a two-win season, but the Boston College football program still showed plenty of fight at the end of last year despite an abundance of injuries and poor play. Bill O’Brien continued to get effort out of his squad, but now he needs to find the talent.

BC’s two wins provided the book ends to last year, beating FCS-level Fordham in the opener then winning at Syracuse to close the season. The over was 8-4 in Boston College’s games in 2025.

Coaching Changes: Well-traveled defensive coordinator Ted Roof will reunite with Bill O’Brien for their second run together. O’Brien hired Roof at Penn State in 2012 while the Nittany Lions were trying to navigate tumultuous circumstances after the Joe Paterno era.

2026 Boston College Football Outlook
There can be some advantages to going 2-10 at a locale where football expectations are bit lower. Take Boston College and head coach Bill O’Brien, who if at an SEC or Big Ten outpost after a two-win effort last autumn would have been subject of an intense barrage of questions about what went wrong last season, job security and such at the summer Media Days.
Instead, at the recent ACC event in Charlotte, and without any beat writers from the Northeast, O’Brien was fielding mostly comfy questions like his favorite places to eat in Boston: “There are so many great Italian restaurants that I would be getting some of them mad if I named just one or two,” before offering that for lunch, “the Capital Grille would be hard to beat.”
So much for O’Brien the food critic, as he also offered pointed observations about the current portal/NIL environment: “The hard thing is that you just don’t know what these other schools are actually offering, and you’re always trying to call a bluff.”
Though even at a far-flung ACC outpost like Boston College, O’Brien knows he eventually needs to win, and didn’t waste time authoring a quick re-set after last fall’s debacle featuring a litany of what could go wrong, from a rash of injuries to personnel issues and coaching disconnects. O’Brien thus jettisoned much of his staff in the offseason, hit the portal hard, hoping to stop the bleeding in a hurry for a better chance to return to Chestnut Hill for a fourth go with the Eagles in 2027.
O’Brien, who aside from a long career as a head coach at both the college and NFL levels, has some established chops as a play-caller in the past for the likes of Bill Belichick and Nick Saban. He has decided to assume those duties himself as the OC for 2026, though the plan is to work in concert with new positional coaches for the right fit.
O’Brien is trusting himself as the first option to fix the offense that will supposedly have a new and more diverse look this fall. After ranking near the bottom (125th) of FBS rushing stats last fall, O’Brien knows the infantry needs an upgrade, and is hopeful that dual-threat transfer QB Mason McKenzie can help solve some of those problems.
McKenzie arrives from lower-tier Saginaw Valley and the same Great Lakes Conference that sent Trinidad Chambliss to Ole Miss last fall, having already passed for 4,301 yards and rushed for 1,673 more in his college career. Other portal adds will man the skill positions and indeed most of the offense that returns just one starter (C Michael Crounse), plus accurate PK Luca Lombardo (15-16 on field goals in 2025), from a year ago.
The change theme continues on defense where O’Brien has enlisted vet coordinator Ted Roof, a onetime Duke head coach, to run the stop unit. Various portal adds were featured in spring, especially edge rusher Kris Jones (via Georgia), hoping to shore up what was a weak spot for last year’s platoon.
Indeed, there were many weak spots in the 2025 defense that ranked 121st in scoring (32.8 ppg) and 126th overall (433.3 ypg). The injury bug hit the defense rather hard a year ago, and O’Brien (and Roof) are hoping that improved depth from the portal prevents a similar drop-off in the fall. Hand-in-hand with increasing the pressure should be more big plays from the defense, which didn’t have enough of those a year ago as the Eagles would register -9 in turnover margin, and another very low ranking (120th) nationally.
Boston College Win Total Prediction
While 2025 was a fiasco in Chestnut Hill, various ACC observers noted improved performances from Boston College down the stretch as O’Brien was able to coax some better efforts from the Eagles in the second half of the campaign, including combative showings vs. heavily-favored Louisville, Notre Dame and Georgia Tech, and a season-ending romp past woeful Syracuse.
That Boston College didn’t quit in light of the adversities of last season was at least something of a silver lining in the many clouds of 2025, and O’Brien, who got to a bowl in the previous 2024, reminded that if even outmanned as a year ago, his teams can still punch above their weight and cover point spreads as they did last November.
Though new QB McKenzie will have to hit the ground running, early dates vs. Cincinnati and Rutgers are win possibilities, so we’ll have a much better idea by mid-Septembe, and before the teeth of the ACC schedule, if the Eagles have indeed upgraded.
A return to bowl action might be asking a bit much, but four wins gets BC above the posted 3.5, and at a slight plus-money price we don’t mind backing O’Brien to at least steward modest improvements. OVER 3.5 WINS
