Canada vs Bosnia Preview

Did you know…In the early 2000s, GoldSheet had a sister publication named European Soccer Weekly?! Long before every European soccer (cough football) match was broadcast in the US on ESPN, Peacock and Paramount, Bruce Marshall and Co. were breaking down the action on the pitch. We offer some thoughts on Friday’s Canada vs Bosnia clash on Match Day 1 of the 2026 World Cup.

Canada’s Current Form

After reaching the Copa América semifinals in 2024 and beating the United States in the CONCACAF Nations League last year, optimism was quite high for Canada heading into the 2026 World Cup. Some of that enthusiasm has taken some blows in recent weeks as the Canadians are dealing with a slew of injuries.

Center back Moïse Bombito and midfielder Marcelo Flores will both miss the tournament with serious leg injuries, while Alphonso Davies, Jacob Shaffelburg and Ali Ahmed are all dealing with hamstring injuries. Davies, who has scored 15 goals in 58 appearances for Canada, is not expected to play in Friday’s opener against Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Canadian manager Jesse Marsch wants to play at a brisk pace and allow his players freedom in transition, but he’s running out of horses to make that possible. Canada has scored a total of nine goals across its last ten matches, including a 1-1 draw with Republic of Ireland in their last tune-up.

The Canadians’ only goal in that match came as a result of an Irish own-goal after Jake O’Brien put the ball in his own net after a Canadian corner kick. Canada only generated two shots on target against the Irish in Montreal, and things aren’t going to get much easier against the Bosnians in their World Cup opener.

Bosnia and Herzegovenia’s Current Form

Few teams are as battle-tested as Bosnia and Herzegovina, who are led by a 40-year-old captain in Edin Džeko and needed playoff victories over Wales and Italy to secure World Cup qualification.

Bosnia’s tune-up for the World Cup included a pair of draws against North Macedonia and Panama. A quick look at Bosnia’s recent form suggests they know how to play for a draw. Bosnia’s last five matches have all ended in a draw.

Canada vs Bosnia and Herzegovenia Prediction

The expansion of the 2026 World Cup from 32 teams to 48 teams means that third-place finishers will have a strong shot to progress to the knockout stage as long as they maintain a respectable goal differential. Group B also contains Qatar, who is widely viewed as one of the worst (possibly THE worst) team in this tournament.

That creates a different feel for this opening match because both the Canadians and Bosnians will be feeling confident that they can make it out of this group, as long as each of them handle business against Qatar.

We’re going to head to the prop market and back Draw / Canada in the Half-Time / Full-Time market, which is available at +370 at FanDuel at the time of posting.

If you ignore that own-goal against Ireland over the weekend, you’d have to go all the way back to November to find the last time Canada scored a first half goal. The Canadians didn’t score until the 66th minute against Guatemala, the 67th minute against Iceland, did not score against Tunisia and scored in the 58th minute against Uzbekistan. We could certainly see that script playing out again in this tournament opener against Bosnia.
