Chelsea’s Current Form
The pieces simply aren’t fitting at Chelsea, and the general feeling among the support base is that the current slump maybe hasn’t even hit bottom yet. Not sure how much lower the Blues might sink after losing comprehensively for a sixth straight time in the Premier League on Monday vs. a rampant Nottingham Forest…then again, almost everyone is looking rampant against Chelsea these days.
At least the Blues got on the board vs. Forest after getting blanked in their previous five EPL tilts, though even then, the goal had to wait until three minutes into stoppage time with the score already 0-3, and it took an audacious bicycle kick by João Pedro. Moreover, it was an under-strength Forest that did all of the damage as Vitor Peiera sent out an almost completely-changed side between Europa League seminfal dates vs. Aston Villa (which didn’t end well for Forest on Thursday).
With the Liam Rosenior experiment having been euthanized two weeks ago, Chelsea’s sinking ship is unlikely to be righted by interim Callum McFarlane, as missing out on Europe altogether next term looks an increasing likelihood unless Chelsea can somehow conspire to upset Man City in the upcoming FA Cup final, with it a guaranteed Europa League place.
We could go down a rabbit hole with all of the reasons things have gone so pear-shaped, with last month’s absurd Enzo Fernandez suspension (was that the doing of Rosenior or BlueCo’s convoluted management?) merely the highest-profile gaffe. Cole Palmer has also been desperately out of form this season, and the status of GK Robert Sanchez is iffy after coming out late vs. Forest.
Amid all of this confusion a new coaching search is to be conducted…but is Chelsea dysfunction now scaring off candidates instead of attracting them? Stay tuned.
Liverpool’s Current Form
Perhaps the hope on Saturday at Anfield is that Liverpool’s own struggles will throw Chelsea a lifeline, but at least the Reds are well-placed to return to Champions League football in the fall, and by all indicators Arne Slot will be given another chance to get it right again next season (though he’ll likely be on a short leash).
Though Hugo Ekitike is out while Mo Salah and Allison remain doubtful, Alexander Isak is expected to be available along with Florian Wirtz and Ibrahima Konaté, and even if Liverpool is off a subpar performance vs. Man United, it doesn’t seem to be in the sort of slump it endured last autumn, when right in the middle of it, Chelsea (in better form those days) scored 2-1 win at the Bridge thanks to a stoppage-time winner from Estêvão.
Liverpool vs Chelsea Prediction
Given Chelsea’s recent woes, Liverpool on the win seems quite fairly priced at -120 and warrants a clear recommendation. We might just leave it there, but Liverpool on Halftime/Fulltime at +185 or so could also be worth another look for a potentially-enhanced return.
If looking at a flyer, Slot’s midfield ace Dominik Szoboszlai, one Liverpool performer in good form lately, and off of a goal and an assist vs. Man U, to net at +275 might be worth a chance.
