Bayern Munich vs PSG First Leg Recap

They’ve got a hard act to follow on Wednesday night in Munich after that breathless Champions League semi first leg last week at the Parc des Pricnes that ended 5-4 in favor of PSG.

Oddsmakers duly noted that rapid-fire pace and have understandably put the second-leg total at 4.5 goals, which is the highest we can recall all season in Europe, if not the past couple of campaigns.

That might not be high enough, either, as Luis Enrique is already on record saying his PSG won’t play to just protect the lead, which would only invite disaster from Vincent Kompany’s Bayern Munich, whose normal play on the front foot should only be accelerated in the second leg.h

Bayern Munich’s Current Form

The German entry can’t help itself, not with Harry Kane the quintessential target man up front (and on an astounding 53 goals in all competitions this term!) and Michael Olise having looked the Bundesliga version of Lamine Yamal all season. There also isn’t a higher-scoring team in European domestic leagues, with Bayern Munich’s 116 goals in the Bundesliga alone almost lapping the continental field.

Ahh, but this all-action style got Kane & Co in plenty of trouble in the first leg, when PSG gleefully picked apart the gaping holes Bayern Munich left at the back, the type that usually aren’t exploited by most Bundesliga entries, though Kompany’s side did fight back from a 5-2 deficit to cut the final margin to 5-4 on goals from Dayot Upamecano and Luis Díaz three minutes apart midway thru the second half.

There is no reason to expect Kompany’s high-risk strategy to change, all-out attack and crossing fingers that defenders like the aforementioned Upamecano can win enough individual duels to snuff out opposing attacks.

PSG’s Current Form

The risk for Bayern Munich is that PSG, which routinely runs into Ligue Un opposition that falls back into a low-block, and not dare risk annihilation by going uptempo, looked ecstatic at the opportunity to run in the first leg; when all five of PSG’s shot attempts at goal went into the net, which is what can happen with finishers like Mr. Ballon d’Or, Ousmane Dembélé, Bradley Barcola, Désiré Doué, and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, who scored a brace in the first leg.

Bayern Munich vs PSG Prediction

Recent meetings previous to last week, including Champions League group phase matches the past two autumns and a Club World Cup encounter in the States last summer, didn’t produce quite the goal-fests like last Tuesday, but given that there have been 16 goals scored in Bayern Munich’s last two Champions League matches (including the quarterfinal second leg vs. Real Madrid), we suspect these two can clear the 4.5 goals, so at +115 we look “over” at Allianz Arena.

Meanwhile, as much of the pundit class seems to think it’s advantage Bayern Munich, we’re not convinced, in fact we’re backing PSG on the spread +0.5 goals at +125, as we suspect the holders can get a result and won’t need extra-time to advance. The PSG side at +340, and the Draw at +425, also intrigue, though we’d rather trade a bit of a payoff for either of two results.

There’s a prohibitive -160 price on Kane to score; we wouldn’t object to backing Kane, but better goal-scoring value might come from Dembélé at +140, and perhaps Olise, with four goals in his last four matches, at +110. A prop of some interest could be either Dembélé or Kvaratskhelia to score first at +400.
