Chelsea vs Tottenham Preview

With the World Cup heading to North America this summer, GoldSheet will be ramping up its soccer coverage over the next few weeks. WagerTalk handicapper and GoldSheet’s featured writer Bruce Marshall shares his thoughts on Tuesday’s Chelsea vs Tottenham showdown on Match Day 37 in the English Premier League.

Daily Betting Analysis from GoldSheet

Stamford Bridge wouldn’t be Tottenham’s first choice for a venue to secure a needed result. A winner just once (in 2018) in the last 36 (!!) as a visitor against Chelsea, Spurs are now forced to confront their venue demons as they face likely their biggest match to this point all season on Tuesday night.

Why the biggest? Thanks to West Ham losing three in a row, there’s suddenly a chance for Spurs to secure safety and not leave it until the final day next Sunday…any result, win or draw, will do at the Bridge.

Chelsea’s Current Form

Perhaps Tottenham is catching Chelsea at the right time, too, as the Blues are winless (six losses and a draw) in their last seven EPL matches, with manager Liam Rosenior sacked along the way three weeks ago and interim Callum McFarlane the third in charge behind the bench this season.

Yet recent efforts haven’t been as bad, cobbling a draw at Liverpool last week and then putting forth a brave display in the FA Cup final on Saturday vs. Man City, only to fall 1-0 on a cheeky strike in the 72nd minute from Pep Guardiola’s Ghanaian charge, Antoine Semenyo.

Word now of Xabi Alonso’s arrival behind the bench for next season could provide a further spark as several of the troops (Cole Palmer and Enzo Fernandez among them) might view these final two games as an audition of sorts as the Blues also fight to keep their European hopes alive.

Tottenham’s Current Form

Granted, Tottenham has steadied under Roberto De Zerbi, with two wins and a draw in five matches to stoke survival hopes, but the wins over bottom-of-table Wolves and a distracted Aston Villa are not necessarily buy signals, and letting a 1-0 lead slip last Monday vs. Leeds when three points could have secured safety further gnaws at Tottenham backers who have had enough to worry about this season.

Spurs have simply tended to trip over their own shoelaces too many times this season for them to be trusted to get a result…especially at what has been such a haunted venue for them.

Besides, the mere thought of being party of a celebration for a London rival should be enough to insure a focused Chelsea effort, and remember that the Blues (then managed by Enzo Maresca) won at Totrenham (then led by Thomas Frank) 1-0 back November 1 …two managers ago for each. João Pedro hit the winner in the 34th minute for Chelsea in that one.

Chelsea vs Tottenham Prediction

Given what has happened the past few decades when these two have met, the win price for Chelsea, at +105 or so, looks too good to bypass.

We might want to stop there, though to potentially enhance the return on a related result, we might want to consider supplemental wager on Chelsea Halftime/Fulltime at +225.

Meanwhile, the lively Fernandez, who scored the equalizer in the Blues’ recent draw at Liverpool, and perhaps making his final appearance at Stamford Bridge, to score at +260 could add some excitement to the viewing.
