Seattle Mariners
Seattle enters this weekend with a three-game lead in the AL West. The Mariners did not play on Thursday, so their bullpen should be rested and ready for the start of this series.
The Mariners’ current roster is hitting .187 in 115 plate appearances against Toronto’s Kevin Gausman with a 31.3-percent strikeout rate and a .272 weighted on-base average.
- Julio Rodriguez is 3-for-14 with a home run and five strikeouts.
- JP Crawford is 2-for-16 with five strikeouts.
- Cal Raleigh is 5-for-11 with three home runs and five strikeouts.
Toronto Blue Jays
Kevin Gausman is coming off his best start of the year, allowing no runs on one hit and one walk in 6.0 innings against the Guardians. José Berríos and Chris Bassitt each went 6.0 innings the last two nights, helping to keep Toronto’s bullpen fresh for the start of this series against the Mariners.
The Blue Jays’ current lineup is hitting .252 in 120 plate appearances against Seattle’s Luis Castillo with a 20.8-percent strikeout rate and a .308 weighted on-base average.
- Bo Bichette is 5-for-18 with two doubles.
- Vlad Guerrero Jr. is 4-for-16 with two doubles and five strikeouts.
- Alejandro Kirk is 4-for-8 with a home run.
Mariners vs Blue Jays Prediction
We’ve got an interesting matchup here because these teams just played in Toronto less than three weeks ago, but Gausman did not pitch for the Blue Jays in that series. So Toronto’s lineup just saw Castillo, while the Mariners have only seen Gausman once in the last two years.
Castillo allowed three runs on ten hits with two walks in 5.0 innings against the Blue Jays on April 20. Familiarity usually helps the hitters, and the Blue Jays looked quite comfortable at the plate against Castillo three weeks ago. We’re expecting that to be the case again on Friday night in Seattle.
