This particular preview is a sad one. Mike Leach was good for the game of college football. Unconventional, yes, but also quite engaging, as former teammates and opposing coaches will attest to. Visiting his watering hole in Key West this Spring, where a chair in his honor hangs was a bit eerie. This season will be interesting.

Mississippi State Football Predictions: Strengths, Weaknesses, Improvements, Declines

The offense is changing. New coordinator Kevin Barbay comes from App St, and he includes plenty of run formations in his scheme.

QB Will Rogers remains, but perhaps he’ll try to stretch the field a bit more in the new scheme. The OL is good. Not much should change defensively, as Arnett was the former coordinator and the new guy was promoted in-house.

The top three tacklers return, but the next seven are gone. The biggest hit comes from the secondary, which is the area I will monitor the most.

Georgia is off the schedule, but I’m still moving the pass defense percentage up from last year’s 59% (63% projected). Kicking has long been an adventure here, with Leach even calling for student volunteers at times.

A transfer from UCLA (35-49 career) is the favorite to win the job. One other defensive note. Despite just four returning starters, the projected eleven are all juniors and seniors.

Mississippi State Football Schedule: Which Games Will They Win?

Game #1 without Leach is vs. 9-4 SE Louisiana. Will that be more interesting than it should be?

Games 3-5 are tough SEC contests, vs. LSU (lost 31-16 last year), at South Carolina (no recent games), and home to Alabama (not good, and scoring has been an issue). Is the game at South Carolina a must win?

Games 7-10 are at Arkansas (decent history, but Arkansas will test Mississippi State’s D), at Auburn (won last two, Tigers with new staff), home to Kentucky (very good host history) and at A&M (won last two).

The goal is 2-2 in these four games, with my checks being the new offense, kicking, and road game performance. The Egg Bowl vs. rival Ole Miss closes out the season. I expect another competitive game.

Mississippi State Football Bottom Line: Total Wins Expected Expert Pick

Possibly 5-5, with games at South Carolina and home to Ole Miss deciding their overall fate. My Intel suggests Arnett wants to make the pass game a vertical one, which I like, but how fast can the new, more balanced offense come together.

I like the staff, but ultimately this season comes down to 4th quarter performance (both protecting leads and producing game-winning drives) and the kicking game. Let’s make a toast to Mike Leach, and hope Mississippe State stays relevant.

Mississippi State Football HANDICAPPING TIP:

I’ll study SE Louisiana to see if they can be a play. I’m leaning LSU if I see Mississippi State is undergoing some growing pains.
