I went UNDER their win total last year, but 5-7 was not what anyone expected. The court of public opinion has Jimbo Fisher practically fired. Let’s give him and his team a chance to make amends.

Texas A&M Football Predictions: AREAS TO WATCH

Let’s start at QB. Soph QB Weigman and Max Johnson are battling it out. One or both can build on ‘22’s modest numbers. Reuben Owens is the nation’s #1 RB recruit.

Texas A&M replaces a 5.6 per carry RB, so charting how quickly Owens can make an impact is important. There are no projected senior starters on the offense (hence the 2024 comment, above), and the OL is especially young.

The line has an average weight of 325 LBS, so I expect potential growth as the season rolls along. If given time, the WR group is solid. Defensively, six of their top seven tacklers return, and the DL is especially deep.

I feel defensive coordinator Durkin is only slightly above average, if that, but I project 4.4 allowed per carry, down from 5.0 achieved in ’22, even with Tennessee added to the schedule.

The secondary lost a pair of day three NFL draftees but A&M has always recruited well and the talent level should not slip. In addition to RB Owens, other keys are QB pass %, and defensive sacks, which plummeted from 39 to just 19 a year ago.

This is a must watch for anyone reading this. Texas A&M typically devotes plenty of attention to special team play and should be just fine in this area.

Texas A&M Football 2023 Predictions, Texas A&M Schedule:

Last year I asked (in this spot) where’s the soft spot in the schedule. This year they ‘should” start 3-1 as the floor, with the tougher games at Miami FL (17-6 win at home in ’22, Miami as usual has a strong roster) and home to Auburn (13-10 loss last year, but this is at home vs. a new staff).

Texas A&M has a good track record in the neutral matchup vs. Arkansas, but this year I think the Hogs will be a stiff test.

Up next are games vs. Alabama (plays them tight) and at Tennessee, so it’s possible the season could start to unravel if Texas A&M’s seasonal keys are not being met. A rested Texas A&M lost at South Carolina a year ago.

They have another bye before hosting the Gamecocks this year. In the past, Fisher’s teams have played well off rest.

The November games on the road are challenging. Ole Miss has no scheduling issues and will test Texas A&M’s defense. I’ll pre-check Texas A&M’s pass rush. The finale at LSU is an even bigger challenge.

Texas A&M Football Bottom Line:

I was correct in writing that A&M faced enormous growing pains coming into last season. Can supporters (and the media) be patient if the Aggies show only modest improvement in ’23?

If there are no portal defections, I truly believe this is a top 12 team in the 1st year of the new playoff format.

As for this year, the early record may only be around 4-3, making this a 7-5 or perhaps an 8-4 conclusion. Maybe that won’t satisfy the “win now” group, but it puts them on the right track for continued improvement once the starters gain more experience.

Texas A&M Football HANDICAPPING TIP:

A win at Miami might signal a faster reload than expected, and I’ll take that into account. Right now, I have no specific games to note, and will just abide by the key watch areas I have noted in this write-up.
