A lot of bettors automatically fade teams on the second night of a back-to-back, but that’s not an angle I blindly follow. The one spot I do like fading teams in that situation is when they’re coming off a win, not a loss. Teams off a loss tend to bring a much higher level of urgency and focus.
That’s exactly what we have with the Rangers here. Their home and road splits have been ugly this season, but this sets up as a strong bounce-back spot after a poor home performance on Monday night. They now get a chance to take advantage of a Canucks team that’s clearly in a vulnerable position after trading away their captain, Quinn Hughes.
Yes, Vancouver did manage to win their first game without Hughes, and the replacement players showed some jump. But that kind of emotional boost rarely carries over for multiple games, especially when facing a highly motivated opponent like the Rangers.
Another key factor is goaltending. Unlike many teams, the Rangers are well-equipped to handle back-to-back situations because they have one of the best backup goalies in the league. Jonathan Quick gets the start tonight, and he’s been outstanding, posting a 1.86 goals-against average and a .937 save percentage. That’s more than enough for me to feel comfortable backing New York in this spot.
