Both teams have vulnerable penalty kills. Buffalo is killing just 69.8% of penalties and Columbus 72.5%. Even without elite power-play conversion, those weaknesses can generate extra scoring opportunities.
Buffalo's projected starting goalie is a concern. Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen has a .874 save percentage and 3.40 GAA this season. His career numbers against Columbus are also poor: 3–3 with a .852 save percentage in six appearances.
Columbus has offensive upside despite a low season average. The Blue Jackets recently beat Colorado 7–2, although their overall offense remains inconsistent.
Buffalo's recent games show scoring volatility. Its last five completed results entering Thursday included a 7–6 win over Anaheim and a 5–0? No—the shutout was a 2–0 win over San Jose. This is precisely why the individual goalies and scoring distribution matter more than a simple streak.
