PSG vs Liverpool Betting Preview

Liverpool’s Current Form

Safe to say Liverpool arrives at Parc des Princes in something of distress after the latest pratfall on the weekend in the FA Cup quarterfinals vs. Man City, bowing meekly to Pep Guardiola’s side 4-0.

Excuses abound for the Reds but the bottom line is that this entire season has been a long way off from a year ago when Arne Slot’s men were comfortable EPL winners. It’s not working this term, even prompting longtime defensive ace Virgil van Dijk to hint that the team “gave up” vs. City.

Various informed onlookers, including Robbie Earle and Robbie Mustoe on their Two Robbies podcast, say that the squad simply seems a step slow across the pitch, while Micah Richards on The Rest of Football believes that if van Dijk isn’t right, neither can be the Liverpool defense.

Barely hanging to 5th place in the Prem, where in its most recent match, mid-table Brighton emerged a 2-1 winner, and Mo Salah now announcing that this will be his last spin at Anfield, are more indicators this is a far piece from a year ago.

When, it should be noted, Liverpool was flying high into the last 16 of the Champs League before getting KO’d on penalties by the same PSG, which went on to win the competition, laying to waste other EPL sides like Aston Villa and Arsenal en route.

A repeat of the first leg last March 5 in Paris would seem far-fetched, too, Liverpool a miraculous 1-0 winner despite being outshot 27-2 (!) and hanging on only because of GK Allison standing on his head.

Now in poor form however, and PSG looking to have switched gears once more as it did at this time a year ago, and confirmed by the aggregate 8-2 rout of Chelsea in the last round of the Champions League, suggests Slot is about to hear more grumbling from a support base that has started to beat the war drums a bit more loudly with each successive loss.

PSG’s Current Form

For PSG, it is minus Bradley Barcola and Fabian Ruiz for this first leg, but ample weaponry is still on hand for Luis Enrique, whose team has fired 5 goals in all competitions across its last four matches, with Ballon d’Or winner Ousmane Dembélé banging home a brace last Friday in Ligue Un during the 3-1 cruise past Toulouse, suggesting he is ready for more highlight-reel moments as a season ago.

PSG vs Liverpool Prediction

It’s hard not to back PSG on the straight win, as the -135 or so price at home seems very reasonable. To perhaps enhance the return, a supplemental punt on PSG Halftime/Fulltime at +162 has some possibilities.

Given PSG’s recent goal-scoring prowess, and Liverepool’s recent defensive issues, “over” 3.5 goals at +120 might be worth a look for a smaller investment, and while Dembélé ‘s goal price at -105 doesn’t excite too much, with Barcola out he will be the main target man for PSG, and perhaps worth a smaller supplemental foray.
