Lightning vs Oilers Betting Preview

Two teams in some excellent form lock-horns on Wednesday night as the Tampa Bay Lightning host the Edmonton Oilers down in Florida.

This new-look Oilers team has picked up rapidly in form over recent games since the appointment of new coach Jay Woodward, winning five of their last six overall and putting up a pretty impressive 25 goals in the process.

The Tampa Bay Lightning meanwhile have lost just two games over their last seven, a shootout loss against Vegas three weeks ago followed by a tough 3-2 road loss against the Colorado Avalanche.

This will be the teams’ first meeting of a two-game series this season.

Oilers Looking Revitalized

The Edmonton Oilers have looked like a revitalized team since the departure of former head coach Dave Tippett almost two weeks ago.

Following his departure, the Oilers reeled off five straight victories, putting up an average of 4.4 goals per game in the process, but finally came unstuck against an excellent Minnesota Wild team on Sunday.

Even in that game however, the Oilers out-shot the Wild by double digits and this Edmonton Oilers offense continues to hum under the league’s two top points leaders this season in Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl.

Extended Break for the Lightning

It’s been over a week since the Lightning’s last game, a 6-3 come from behind win against the New Jersey Devils back on February 15th.

After falling behind early in that contest, the Lightning rallied with five unanswered goals to take the lead and even more impressively, got six different players on the scoreboard in that one as well.

That extended rest for Tampa Bay should prove beneficial here as well as the Lightning are 41-20 straight-up over their last 61 games coming off a break of 3 or more days.

Lightning vs Oilers Prediction

We’re looking towards the Tampa Bay Lightning in this one to win in regulation on Thursday against the Edmonton Oilers.

Edmonton has displayed a fantastic offense so far this season, especially over the last two weeks, averaging 4.2 goals per game since Woodward took charge and owning the fourth-most power plays goals in the league this season as well.

However, on defense it’s been a much different story as Edmonton ranks 26th overall on defensive xGA this season and they are giving up the third-most goals per game in the West also.

Tampa Bay meanwhile rank top-ten in both offense and defense this year, both on actual goals for and against and in terms of the overall data as well, as the Lightning rank 10th on expected goals this season and seventh on expected goals against also.

If Andrei Vasilevskiy starts in nets tonight against Mike Smith, which is what the expected lineups have listed for Wednesday, then that only makes this play even stronger as Vasilevskiy’s numbers have been excellent all season, seventh-best in the league overall, while Smith is posting both a sub.900 SV% and a negative GSAA average this season as well.

Take the Tampa Bay Lightning in regulation tonight at -135 to get the home win against the Edmonton Oilers.
