Washington Football Team vs Seattle Seahawks Betting Notes

  • Washington Football Team -1.5 vs Seattle Seahawks
  • Total: 46.5 Points
  • The under is 7-0-1 in Seattle’s last eight games.
  • Seattle is 0-2 against the spread since Russell Wilson’s return after going 3-0 ATS with Geno Smith at the helm.

It’s never fun to watch two sub-.500 teams squaring off on the Monday night stage, especially this late in the season. Matchups are pre-determined, and no one would have envisioned the Seahawks coming into Week 12 tied for the second-worst record in NFC, so we’re at least getting a de facto elimination game here.

Because there’s a seventh playoff spot available following this 18-week regular season, teams hovering around .500 entering the stretch run are all in contention, and a 4-6 Washington Football Team and the 3-7 Seahawks can get into the fight with well-timed win streak. Minnesota, New Orleans and San Francisco are currently in position to claim the final two NFC playoff spots at just 5-5, so even though the loser of this Monday night game will likely be realistically done, the winner can continue to dream and surge forward.

No one could have foreseen that Seattle would have fewer wins than any team in the NFC except the winless Lions at this point but it has nevertheless not given up on the season. Geno Smith was able to pick up one win while Russell Wilson was on the mend following finger surgery, but even though he came back earlier than expected, the offense has sputtered in losses to Green Bay and Arizona in which the Seahawks have produced just 13 total points.

Wilson has looked rusty and a lack of protection up front hasn’t aided the cause, but it’s easy to have faith with him feeling better by the day. A win here would help leapfrog a Washington team that kept its own playoff hopes alive by defeating the Panthers last week, so we should see two desperate squads squaring off in Landover.

Wilson had never lost three straight games in a single season so he’s definitely due here. His run of 150 starts without three straight defeats was the NFL’s longest since 1950. With RB Chris Carson out the rest of the way, RBs Travis Homer and Deejay Dallas have to provide more cover than they’ve managed to date to keep teams from teeing off on the star quarterback. Washington doesn’t have Chase Young available to wreak havoc up front but still has a formidable front seven that can do damage against Wilson at home. Weather conditions are set to be mild for this time of year in the D.C. area, so that should aid the cause for both Wilson and counterpart Taylor Heinicke. Temperatures are set to be right around 30 degrees but it isn’t expected to be windy or rainy.

Washington continues to get big games out of WR Terry McLaurin, which has helped teammate DeAndre Carter record a TD reception in three straight games since defenses have shaded coverage to stop McLaurin.

The Seahawks have allowed 23 or fewer points in five straight games and are hoping to clamp down on Heinicke enough to pick up a much-needed Monday night road win, but the number here (46.5) looks fishy. Seattle has obviously sputtered of late and Washington had scored 13 or fewer points in three straight games prior to scoring 29 points in pulling off an upset of Tampa Bay before scoring 27 at Carolina in a victory last week.

Washington is a small favorite at home depending on where you shop, but the best bet here is to expect an entertaining matchup that produces points given that survival is at stake. Ride the high side.

Washington Football Team vs Seattle Seahawks Analysis from The GoldSheet

While no one is calling for Geno Smith to return to the Seahawks lineup, he couldn’t have been much worse the past two weeks than Russell Wilson, whose performances suggests he is not beyond the recent finger injury that kept him out for three games (all Seattle covers with Geno, by the way). The Seahawks have been outscored 40-13 in consecutive losses to the Packers and Kyler Murray-less Cardinals. Whether it’s his finger, lingering rust from missing three weeks, or first year offensive coordinator Shane Waldron’s playcalling, it’s not working for the Hawks, with an ominous feeling the whole thing could blow up in the offseason if Wilson gets more serious about previous trade demand threats, and Pete Carroll looking like he could a couple of weeks in the Bahamas during the post-game.

There’s a different vibe now in Washington, with the Team looking like it might come alive down the stretch as it did last season when the D led the push; three straight games allowing fewer than 300 yards, even with Chase Young sidelined, suggests Ron Rivera is again pushing the right buttons, while Taylor Heinicke is now able to lean a bit more on a revived infantry (Antonio Gibson 95 YR last week vs. the Pan-thas) while he continues to make enough plays, including 3 TD passes in the win over Carolina, to make his teammates believe.
