Tampa Bay Buccaneers Wildcard Game Takeaways
Philly’s deep slump continued as Tampa came out passing and found TE Otton early and often. Only WR DeVonta Smith was a force as Tampa won every meaningful statistical category.
The Buccaneers like to run Rachaad White (18-72), who has played better as discussed last week. The Buc’s run D was stout, but they lack a shut down pass D.
Detroit Lions Wildcard Game Takeaways
Both QB’s impressed me with their poise, but in the end, this game was won by how drives in the red zone played out.
I noted last week that the LA Rams had attempted 43 field goals, and that was NOT a good thing. The Lions only attempted 21. Both teams reached the red zone three times, but the Rams settled for a trio of field goals, while the Lions turned these opportunities into touchdowns.
The Lions and Dan Campbell made only one tactical mistake in this game (LA with at least three, including timeout usage), but they did get conservative during a large part of the second half.
They prevailed, but I’d call this game dead even. Detroit was one uncalled penalty away from a possible defeat.
Tampa Bay Buccaneers vs Detroit Lions Prediction: The PICK
Detroit beat Tampa 20-6 at Tampa. The Bucs were held to 205 yards. Only WR’s Godwin and Evans had decent games.
Mayfield was just 19-37, while Goff was 30-44 for 353 yards. St. Brown caught 10 for 124 yards. The rematch is in Detroit.
Tampa’s 1st concern has to be playing better vs. the pass. The 2nd concern is their run game, which while improved, gets a pretty stiff test in this spot.
The 3rd concern is Baker’s pass %, which might not improve much in the rematch. The line (Lions -6) seems a tad high, but not enough to make Tampa a Power Play. I like the grit on display from Baker and Tampa, but this does look like a tough matchup.
Repeating what I said last week, there’s no reason for the Lions to get cute in this spot. I’m not willing to give the points, so check back for some late week prop recommendations.
