NFL Offensive Player of the Year Trends

Saquon Barkley won the award last season with a league leading & franchise record 2,283 yards from scrimmage which was an NFL-high 34.8% of his team’s output while also adding 15 touchdowns.

Christian McCaffrey won the award in 2023 in his first full season with the San Francisco 49ers as he led the league in rushing yards (1,459), yards from scrimmage (2,023) and touchdowns (21) in spite of sitting out the regular season finale after the 49ers had clinched home-field advantage. 

Running backs and wide receivers have split the award during the last six seasons with Justin Jefferson, Cooper Kupp and Michael Thomas winning the award recently (Derrick Henry won in 2020). Jefferson brought home the award in 2022 with a 128/1809/8 season, following a 145/1947/16 campaign by Kupp in 2021. 

From 1994-2018, only quarterbacks (10) and running backs (18) won the award.

2025 NFL Offensive Player of the Year Prediction: Ja’Marr Chase, Bengals (+900)

Ja’Marr Chase hasn’t won this award yet, but he finished 3rd in the voting last season in a career year where he led the NFL with career highs in receiving yards (1,708), receiving touchdowns (17), receptions (127) and targets (175). 

The early season contract disharmony hurt his performance in the first two weeks of the season, in which he amassed only 97 receiving yards and no touchdowns.

Chase went on to eclipse 90 yards in 9 of his last 15 games while registering at least 177 yards three times.

The Cincinnati Bengals will again be a high-octane offense Joe Burrow leading the way and Chase & Tee Higgins both being re-signed for the long term.

Burrow was also dealing with a nagging wrist injury, and he’s publicly stated that the injury is in the past. We rolled with Burrow as our MVP prediction and that goes hand-in-hand with another massive season from Chase.

2025 Offensive Player of the Year Sleeper Prediction: Christian McCaffrey, 49ers (+2200)

Christian McCaffrey is coming off of a lost season where he was limited to just four games due to an achilles injury that delayed his season debut and a subsequent knee injury that eventually forced the San Francisco 49ers to shut down their star running back.

However, McCaffrey has received full medical clearance heading into the 2025 campaign and the 2023 rushing leader and Offensive Player of the Year is set to see a heavy workload as the 49ers look to bounce back from a brutal 6-11 finish.

San Francisco has the easiest predicted schedule, and they have lost a lot of key talent. Deebo Samuel is now a Washington Commander, Brandon Aiyuk is highly unlikely to be available at the start of the season and Ricky Pearsall is already dealing with a hamstring injury.

The 49ers may lean on McCaffrey early and often and he’s still only 29 years old. McCaffrey is just too talented to pass up these odds at 22-1.
