•Since the award returned in 1998, we have seen 18 quarterbacks, three wide receivers, five defensive players, one running back and one tight end win the award. 

•A quarterback has won the award in each of the past seven seasons including Joe Burrow last season after leading the NFL in both passing yards (4,918) and passing touchdowns (43). 

•No defensive player has won the award since Eric Berry in 2015.

•The award was shared when Tedy Bruschi and Steve Smith Sr. were both named NFL CPOY back in 2005.

2025 Comeback Player of the Year Prediction: Dak Prescott, Cowboys (+275)

I avoided backing the favorite on the majority of these NFL 2025 Award articles, but Dak Prescott stands out for multiple reasons starting with him being a quarterback as that position has won the award in seven straight seasons.

Prescott also fits the bill as a player who is coming off a major injury after missing the 2nd half of the season due to a torn hamstring.

When Dak is healthy, he’s basically a lock for 4,000+ passing yards after throwing for 4,516 yards in 2023 (17 games), 4,449 yards in 2021 (16 games) and 4,902 yards in 2019 (16 games).

Even last season, he was on pace for 4,203 yards if he played all 17 games. The Dallas Cowboys elevated Brian Schottenheimer to head coach after parting ways with Mike McCarthy and Prescott ranked #3 in passing yards and #1 in passing touchdowns in Schottenheimers first season as offensive coordinator (2023).

The Cowboys also added George Pickens to their receiving core and that will allow CeeDee Lamb to flourish as the slot receiver.

Only the Carolina Panthers allowed more points than Dallas in 2024 and the defense doesn’t look much stronger on paper especially with Micah Parsons requesting a trade.

The running game was also non-existent in Dallas (27th less than 100 yds/gm) and they only added 5th round pick Jaydon Blue.

At the writing of this article, the Cowboys brought in Prescott’s old friend offensive lineman La’el Collins who played two 70+ game stints in Dallas and that could help sure up the protection.

If Prescott stays healthy and pushes the Cowboys to playoff spot, he’s basically a lock to win the award and we just watched Joe Burrow win in 2024 while missing the postseason with a 9-8 record.

2025 Comeback Player of the Year Sleeper Prediction: Anthony Richardson, Colts (+3500)

It feels like whoever wins the quarterback competition in Indianapolis could be worth a sprinkle to win this award and I have a sneaky suspicion that Anthony Richardson is the Week 1 starter.

Even if Daniel Jones comes out on top, there is a great chance that Richardson takes over whether it’s due to injury or poor play.

Richardsons sophomore season was cut short due to a shoulder injury, but his dual threat upside makes him an intriguing player entering the 2025 campaign.

The Colts still have nice weapons in Jonathan Taylor & Michael Pittman Jr, and they used the 14th overall pick on former Penn State tight end Tyler Warren.

According to PFF, the Colts have the NFL’s 5th ranked offensive line despite the departures of Ryan Kelly & Will Fries as they may have the top left tackle-left guard pairing in Quenton Nelson and Bernhard Raimann.

Putting a sprinkle on both Richardson and Daniel Jones could be a solid strategy but we get a slightly better price with AR-15.
