Phoenix Suns vs New Orleans Pelicans Analysis

The New Orleans Pelicans begin a three game road trip in Phoenix against the Suns on Friday night. The Suns are coming off a tremendous 134-105 home victory over the NBA champions, the Golden State Warriors.

The Pelicans are also coming off an impressive 113-111 victory over the runner-up in the Western Conference, the Dallas Mavericks. This will be the first of four head-to-head meetings in a season series the Suns won 3-1 last season.

However, Phoenix had their hands full against New Orleans in the playoffs as the Pels pushed them to six games. Tip-off is slated for 10:00 PM EST/7:00 PST as the ESPN nightcap.

Deja Vu For Injured Pels

The New Orleans Pelicans outlasted the Dallas Mavericks in a 113-111 victory, despite dealing with injuries to key players. Trey Murphy III led the Pelicans in scoring with 22 points while CJ McCollum added 14 points while leading his team in assists with 11 dimes.

The Pelicans are dealing with a laundry list of injuries that includes Zion Williamson (hip), Brandon Ingram (concussion), Herbert Jones (knee), Jose Alvarado (back) and Kira Lewis Jr (knee). New Orleans boasts the 2nd highest offensive rating in the league with 120.4 points per possession.

Defensively they rank below average at 17th in points allowed with 113.3 a game. CJ McCollum has struggled to find his touch beyond the arc but he has found his way as a facilitator. The Pelicans will need him to carry this team through the injuries.

By The Book

After a tumultuous off-season the Phoenix Suns have relied heavily on the production of their young shooting guard, Devin Booker. Booker is tied for the league lead in points and is tied for 7th in the sport in assists with 32.5 points and 5.8 assists a game.

He has been shooting the lights out at 53% from the field and 48% from three-point land. Book led all scorers with 34 points in the Suns 134-105 victory over the Golden State Warriors. Chris Paul paced his team in assists with 9 dimes while De’Andre Ayton worked the glass for 14 rebounds.

The Suns are relatively injury free but are still without Jae Crowder due to personal reasons. The defense has been elite in Phoenix as they rank 3rd in points allowed with only 104.5 per game. On offense they rank above average at 11th with 116 points a game.

Phoenix Suns vs New Orleans Pelicans Prop Bet

The Phoenix Suns are favored by 7 points over the New Orleans Pelicans with a total of 225.5. My initial thought was to attack some Pelicans props, as being without their two top players will leave a ton of stats up for grabs.

However the books are on to us, they haven’t released any Pels props yet. Maybe look towards McCollum assists as he has become more of a ball-handler with Zion & Ingram.

Chris Paul is a famous assist man who has struggled early with his shooting touch. He has fallen short of his 13.5 point total in 3 of 4 games this season. Paul had 16 last time out as he shot 4 for 5 from three-point land. Prior to that game, he was 1 for 13 from long distance.

I’m looking at him hitting one less three-pointer and falling short of this total. Another factor is a potential blowout with so many players being out for New Orleans. If the Suns build a huge lead, Paul would be on top of the list to rest.

Prediction: Chris Paul Under 13.5 Points -130
