Los Angeles Clippers vs Phoenix Suns Predictions

  • Phoenix Suns -3 at Los Angeles Clippers
  • Total: 211.5 Points
  • The under has cashed in five of Phoenix’s last six games.

The Suns and Clippers face off in LA and both teams are coming into this game playing with confidence, and that’s one of the reasons we have a small spread of -3.5. The total stands at 214, and while both teams are coming into the game rested, they aren’t totally healthy. Ayton has been dealing with an illness, and Paul George missed last game with an elbow injury. I would expect both players to be ready for the game, so when I’m handicapping this game I’m assuming both play.

The Clippers have been around .500 for the season, and right now they are 15-12, and coming off of three straight wins and four out of five. However, these wins aren’t very convincing. The Lakers, Portland, Boston and Orlando are all teams massively struggling right now, and while you can only play who’s on your schedule they’ve lost twice to Sacramento, and once to New Orleans and Golden State since November 28th, so I’m taking this recent win streak with a grain of salt. The Clippers haven’t covered the spread in four straight, so despite their wins they aren’t doing it convincingly.

The Suns have picked up where they left off after having their winning streak snapped. They won their next two games covering against Boston, but not against San Antonio, and that’s a good example of them this season. They win, but only cover about 50% of the time. They lost three out of four to start the season and since then are on an incredible 20-1 ML run with the lone loss being to Golden State. When we have a team that wins, but doesn’t cover all the time facing a team that has non-dominating wins against lower quality opponents and the spread is just -3, the play becomes pretty clear to me.

I’ll happily take the Suns to win against the spread, even if Ayton is still out. The Suns are deep and have been fine without Booker. If it was a 7 game series I might be more worried about Booker and Ayton, but the Suns have lots of talent on their roster to fill the voids in one game. With Chris Paul healthy and running the team, I think they take care of business against a Clippers team I see beating teams lesser than them and struggling to consistently keep up with the better teams in the league.

OFFICIAL PLAY: Suns -3

Los Angeles Clippers vs Phoenix Suns Analysis from The GoldSheet

First look for the Clips at the Suns since Phoenix knocked them out of the West Finals in early July. Unfortunately Kawhi Leonard not available to help in the revenge plot and maybe not Paul George, either, whose elbow injury has kept him out of LA’s last two games and likely sidelines him again tonight. No George hasn’t stopped the Clip win streak from stretching to four games, though Ty Lue’s guys didn’t make it easy on themselves in a narrow 2-point win over the Magic on Saturday after a nervous 3-point win over the Celtics on Wednesday.

Phoenix might not be at full strength, either, with Devin Booker (hamstring) out and Deandre Ayton having missed games the past week with non-Covid illness. With Frank Kaminsky (knee) out, Monty Williams likely to play some small-ball on Monday, but Suns well-equipped to do so as Jae Crowder can play post defense in a pinch. And besides, the only Phoenix loss in seven weeks was Steph Curry and the Warriors getting quick revenge Dec. 3 at Chase Center from a loss suffered at Phoenix a few nights earlier. The Suns’ defense has also been underrated, as even minus the bigs has been able to defend the rim, and fueling current 5-1 “under” run. Play Phoenix.
