Golden State Warriors at San Antonio Spurs Analysis

The Golden State Warriors take a short trip to the AT&T Center in San Antonio to face the Spurs on Tuesday night. The Warriors beat the Rockets 122-108 in the first game of their Texas two-step in Houston last night.

Meanwhile the Spurs record dropped to 19-32 after losing 115-100 in Phoenix against the Suns on Sunday night. The Spurs stole the first of four head-to-head meetings 112-107 in San Francisco back in early December.

Warriors on a Roll Again

After winning six straight games, the Golden State Warriors have kept a foothold on the 2nd best record in the NBA at 38-13. The Warriors will be playing the second game of a back-to-back and are 5-3 with a +5.1 scoring margin in that role.

Steph Curry led the team with 40 points while Andrew Wiggins chipped in with 23 points of his own. Golden State continues to be without Draymond Green, Andre Iguodala, Otto Porter Jr and Nemanja Bejlica on this current road trip. The Warriors are continuing to adapt to life without Draymond Green who was averaging just over seven points, rebounds and assists on the season.

Klay Thompson has been added back into the fold and he continues to work his way back into the rotation. However, Thompson shouldn’t be expected to play as he continues to rest on back-to-back games.

The Warriors have #1 rated defense in terms of efficiency and points allowed with only 102.1 points a game. They score just over 110 points per game, which ranks them 12th in the association.

Short Handed Spurs Lose To Suns

The San Antonio Spurs suffered a 115-100 loss to the Phoenix Suns. They decided to rest starters Dejounte Murray, Jakob Poeltl and Derrick White. Doug McDermott led the team with 24 points while Lonnie Walker added 22 of his own.

Dejounte Murray is having an incredible season where he has averaged close to a triple double with 19.4 points, 9.1 assists and 8.4 rebounds. San Antonio is slightly above average in scoring with 111.3 points per game. They also rank only 24th in points allowed with 111.4 a game, while ranking 16th in defensive efficiency. The Spurs come into this game with a clean injury report.

Golden State Warriors at San Antonio Spurs Prediction

The Golden State Warriors come into this contest as 2.5 point favorites with a total of 225. The Warriors are on the second game of a back-to-back and are playing their 3rd game in four nights, so you have to watch to see how Steve Kerr manages the rotation.

Meanwhile the Spurs rested starters on Sunday and had yesterday off. Even though the Warriors are short handed they still have Curry, Wiggins and Poole. They should be able to do enough scoring to take advantage of a poor Spurs defense. I’m going to take a shot with the Warriors due to the short spread.

Golden State Warriors at San Antonio Spurs Preview from GoldSheet

Even by their lofty standards, the Warriors have tapped a rich vein of form lately, entering this week with their best five-game offensive stretch of the season (116.6 points per 100 possessions) before pushing the win streak to six on Monday at Houston.

Steph certainly on song at the moment after dropping 40 on the Rockets last night, and when Klay Thompson is available and playing aside him, Jordan Poole gets his minutes off of the bench and has been able to keep the second unit afloat.

Steph might also have a score to settle here with Coach Pop after the Spurs held him to a very un-Curry-like 7 for 28 from the floor in a 112-107 SA surprise at Chase Center back on Dec. 4 when Derrick White and Dejounte Murray combined for 48 on the Spurs side.

Pop not wining all of the time, but he’s been close in the last week or so vs. sorts like the Sixers, Griz, and Suns, the latter minus White (who likely returns tonight), Murray (left knee contusion), and Jakob Poeltl (back).

But as much as Steve Kerr would like to sympathize with his spiritual hero Popovich, we doubt he will as Klay likely sits tonight in a second of back-to-back scenario, though Otto Porter expected to be available after holding him out vs. the Rockets. And note, too, that second of back-to-backs has not been a great role lately (just 2-4 vs. line last six) for Golden State, which has also lost five of its last seven away, even after last night’s road win vs. the Rockets.
