Atlanta Hawks vs Minnesota Timberwolves Analysis

The Atlanta Hawks welcome in the Minnesota Timberwolves to State Farm Arena on Wednesday night as they snapped an ice-cold five-game losing streak to the Milwaukee Bucks on Monday with a big win and cover. Minnesota, meanwhile, have won six of their last eight games in all and will look to avenge a 121-110 losing effort to Atlanta on home court back on December 6th in the teams only prior meeting this season.

Minnesota Road Warriors

The Timberwolves have been good value to backers of them on the road this season, cashing tickets away from home this year to the tune of a 57% clip. That success has mainly come on the offensive end for Minnesota as their offensive efficiency metrics jump from a home average 27th in the league, to a pretty unbelievable 5th in the league when the Timberwolves have traveled on the road this season. Those offensive numbers away from home for Minnesota were on full display last night also as the Timberwolves had more points in the paint, more fastbreak points and outshot the Knicks from both three point range and free throw range in that game.

Atlanta’s Momentum Builder

The Atlanta Hawks put in a massive 2nd half effort in Monday’s game against the Milwaukee Bucks, a game they were losing in by double-digits at the break, to finally see them break a 10 game losing streak at home, the 2nd longest cold streak in franchise history.

The Hawks will hope that performance provides a momentum builder heading into the All-Star Break next month, but what was most impressive about that win however was that Atlanta managed it all without being particularly hot from the floor in that one either. The Hawks were outshot from the floor in that game by the Bucks, they were outshot from three point range, had fewer points in the paint, yet they still managed to outscore Milwaukee 38-26 in the 4th quarter in that game to force home the win.

With Clint Capela and Bogdan Bogdanovic still sidelined for the Hawks ahead of this one, they’ll need to match that same level of intensity here if they’re going to complete the season sweep on the Timberwolves later tonight.

Atlanta Hawks vs Minnesota Timberwolves Prediction

Trae Young ripped this Minnesota Timberwolves team for 29 points and 11 assists earlier last month as the Hawks ran out easy double-digit winners in that game. I don’t see that being the case here tonight however. Despite having an extra day to prepare for Atlanta ahead of this one, the Hawks poured a ton of effort into that 2nd half comeback against Milwaukee on Monday night as they continue to remain short-handed, so the back to back situation for Minnesota tonight shouldn’t pose all that much of a concern.

The other factor for Minnesota here tonight, as we mentioned previously, is their stellar road form this season. The Timberwolves are 8-3-1 ATS over their last 11 road games in all while the Hawks are a paltry 1-10 ATS over their last 11 home games when installed as a pre-game home favorites.

Minnesota is playing really well right now and on top of their impressive road form this season, the Timberwolves also own the league’s 8th best defense on overall defensive efficiency this year, so they pose a real threat on both ends of the court for a short-handed Atlanta Hawks team tonight.

Look for the Timberwolves to split the series later tonight with a big win and cover on the road in Atlanta.

Atlanta Hawks vs Minnesota Timberwolves Preview from GoldSheet

Minnesota is coming off a hard-fought 112-110 victory at New York over the Knicks, when the Timberwolves covered the opener but were bet all the way up to a 4-point favorite. One barrier for Minny was that PF Jared Vanderbilt was in foul trouble (NY’s Julius Randle shot 9-11 FTs). Still, as far as Karl-Anthony Towns, D’Angelo Russell and Anthony Edwards are concerned, it’s time to flex the biceps a bit after winning 6 of the last 8 games.

Atlanta likely also feeling a bit better of itself after rallying back to defeat defending champion Milwaukee on Monday, 121-114 with Trae Young scoring 30 points and dishing 11 assists. Unfortunately for the Hawks, that was one of only a few bright spots since early December, as they’ve turned in a 6-15 mark since Dec. 1 and haven’t won back-to-back games since Thanksgiving. Hawks are still without swingman Bogdan Bogdanovic (Nate McMillan hopes to have him back by the weekend after rehabbing a sore knee), with McMillan giving the same prognosis for C Clint Capela (ankle; back by either Miami on Friday or Charlotte on Sunday). That doesn’t do the Hawks much good in this game. Play Minnesota.
