UFC 328 Predictions: Undercard
Joshua Van +150 vs Tatsuro Taira -156
Both are young and rising fast. Van is now champion after Pantoja’s injury. He has the striking edge, while Taira has the wrestling advantage.
However, Van’s takedown defense has been excellent, and Taira has leaned less on wrestling recently. If this stays on the feet, Van can win. Van is the pick.
Alexander Volkov -163 vs Waldo Cortes-Acosta +156
Acosta has found KO power recently, but his win over Delija came in controversial fashion. Volkov uses range well and is very durable — he doesn’t get knocked out.
This could be a low volume fight, but Volkov should control distance better. Close fight, Volkov is the pick, but not a betting spot.
Sean Brady -138 vs Joaquin Buckley +133
When Brady can wrestle, he dominates. If he can’t, he struggles badly on the feet. Buckley is the better striker but hasn’t proven he can stop takedowns. This is straightforward — Brady wrestles for three rounds and wins a decision. Brady is the pick.
King Green -323 vs Jeremy Stephens +265
Stephens relies on a big KO shot and has been focused on boxing, not MMA. This stays on the feet, but Green has better speed, movement, and volume. He should pick Stephens apart from range and avoid danger. Green by decision.
Ateba Gautier -872 vs Ozzy Diaz +683
Gautier burned bettors last time by not getting the KO, but this is still a mismatch. Diaz has been knocked out in his last two losses against less powerful fighters. Gautier’s power should be too much. Gautier by KO is the pick.
Joel Alvarez +156 vs Yaroslav Amosov -163
Amosov has strong wrestling and a solid debut, but Alvarez is a violent striker who can also fight off his back. Style-wise it’s a tough matchup for Alvarez, but he can turn this into chaos. I’ll take the upside — Alvarez is the pick.
Grant Dawson -170 vs Mateusz Rebecki +163
Dawson’s durability is a concern, but his wrestling is elite — if he gets opponents down, they stay down. Rebecki is reckless and absorbs a ton of damage. Dawson should avoid extended striking exchanges, get takedowns, and control the fight. Dawson is the pick.
Jim Miller +252 vs Jared Gordon -307
Miller is past his prime and dealing with injuries, especially in his knees. Gordon fought well last time despite being injured before the fight. He’s more athletic and should have advantages in both striking and wrestling. Gordon is the pick.
Roman Kopylov +163 vs Marco Tulio -170
Kopylov looks to be fading, with back-to-back losses and declining durability. Tulio throws heavy early and has five straight fights ending before Round 3. His power should overwhelm Kopylov early. Tulio is the pick.
Pat Sabatini -209 vs William Gomis +173
Sabatini is elite with takedowns and control. Gomis is the better striker, but his wrestling defense likely won’t hold up here. Even with his awkward stance, Sabatini should get this to the ground and control it. Sabatini is the pick.
Baisangur Susurkaev -721 vs Djorden Santos +489
Susurkaev is good but overpriced. He struggled at times last fight, and Santos showed toughness and willingness to brawl. If Susurkaev isn’t sharp, Santos could steal moments. Susurkaev is the pick, but this price is unplayable.
Clayton Carpenter +170 vs Jose Ochoa -178
Neither fighter is impressive. Ochoa has terrible takedown defense, which is a major issue here. Carpenter isn’t a great striker, but if he commits to wrestling, he should have success. Carpenter is a solid underdog pick.
UFC 328 Main Event: Khamzat Chimaev -491 vs Sean Strickland +397
Strickland wants this to be a boxing match, but Chimaev will wrestle and maul him. Chimaev looked like he fixed his cardio issues last fight, and there’s real intensity in this matchup. He won’t get cute here — expect takedowns and dominant ground control. Chimaev is the pick.
