DWCS Week 10 Predictions
Smilla Sundell (-550) vs Aline Pereira (+410)
Sundell is only 21 years old, but she already has extensive Muay Thai and kickboxing experience, along with two violent finishes in MMA. Her striking is excellent, and she has a tremendous killer instinct.
She can finish opponents with punches, kicks, or knees, and she knows how to put opponents away when she has them hurt. She’s been taken down a few times, but she’s shown the ability to get back to her feet, and her cardio appears to be very good.
Pereira just doesn’t look physical enough to compete with Sundell. She barely escaped with a split-decision victory against a lower-level opponent, and I don’t see the tools necessary to give Sundell problems.
She doesn’t hit as hard, doesn’t have the wrestling to exploit Sundell’s weaknesses, and appears to be at a significant strength disadvantage. Sundell by finish is the pick.
Luis Francischinell (-258) vs Will Rentz (+210)
Francischinell is extremely tall with long arms and legs, but what’s impressive is how much power he generates despite his lanky frame. He does an excellent job mixing up his offense, switching between kicks and punches while using his length to keep opponents at distance. He’s a dangerous striker who looks like a legitimate prospect.
Rentz is a heavy hitter himself, but he’s much more compact and is going to have a difficult time dealing with Francischinell’s reach. It’s also hard to know exactly how good Rentz is because he’s faced such weak competition.
I think Francischinell has the better overall striking tools and should be able to control the exchanges with his length and power. Francischinell at -258 is the pick.
Douglas da Lapa (-192) vs Davi Cabral (+160)
Cabral is primarily a striker, while da Lapa brings more wrestling and ground-game experience to the matchup. However, I’ve seen da Lapa get taken down and controlled on the ground himself, so I don’t consider his grappling an overwhelming advantage. Da Lapa is definitely the better striker, but Cabral can hold his own on the feet and has enough ability to make this competitive.
I don’t see the gap between these two fighters being as wide as the odds suggest. Cabral has enough striking ability and potential opportunities on the ground to make him worth considering at this price. Cabral at +160 is the underdog pick.
Jason Asher (-205) vs Greg Foster (+170)
Neither fighter has faced particularly strong competition, so there are still plenty of questions about both guys and some obvious holes in their games. Foster concerns me more, though. He looks shaky, and he already has a loss to an opponent with a 5-6 record. That’s not exactly encouraging heading into this matchup.
Both guys are going to want to strike, and I don’t expect this to be a fight where either one is interested in playing it safe. Asher looks like the better fighter, and I thought he looked excellent at the faceoffs.
With both guys likely to exchange early, I think there’s a strong chance this ends inside the distance. Asher by finish is the pick, and I also like the fight under.
DWCS Week 10 Main Event: Ilias Bulaid vs Erick Visconde
Bulaid is exciting with a ton of energy early. He throws extremely hard kicks and punches and has been able to overwhelm his opponents so far.
Visconde, though, is experienced and pretty good defensively. He likes to initiate the clinch, so I don’t expect him to simply stand at range and eat the shots that Bulaid’s previous opponents have.
Bulaid throws a lot of unique kicks from different angles, but Visconde should be able to close the distance and prevent him from completely opening up his offense. Visconde may also have the better cardio as the fight progresses.
