Seattle Mariners vs Chicago White Sox Analysis

The Seattle Mariners host the Chicago White Sox at T-Mobile Park Tuesday night in the second of a three game set. The South Siders took game one by a count of 3 to 2, behind seven strong innings from Lance Lynn. He only gave up three hits and one run (zero earned), walked one and struck out 11.

Tonight should be another good pitching matchup with Johnny Cueto taking the hill against Logan Gilbert. The Mariners are a -150 favorite and the Sox are a +130 underdog, with the over/under total at 7.5. First pitch in the Emerald City is scheduled for 9:40 PM EDT / 6:40 PDT.

Johnny Come Lately

Although their chances of making the playoffs are slim, Chicago has played some good baseball this past week. They’ve won five of their last six games behind solid pitching, and gave up a combined 14 runs in that stretch.

It wasn’t that long ago that Johnny Cueto’s career appeared to be over with, but he’s found some of his old pitching magic in the Windy City, as he’s had a really good season for his new team. In 19 starts and 129.0 innings, he’s posted a 2.93 ERA, a 1.17 WHIP with 82 strikeouts.

The veteran right-hander isn’t the power pitcher he used to be, but has shown excellent control – giving up just 27 walks and 13 home runs year-to-date.

The White Sox bats have also come to life, as they’re 8th in team OPS and 3rd in batting average versus right-handers the last 30 days. South Side fans – and many baseball analysts – have wondered where this kind of performance has been all year.

They were a popular pick to win the AL Central and make the playoffs last spring, and time will tell if they can play well enough to get the final wild card spot – or it’ll be a case of too little and too late.

Rodriguez Odds On AL Rookie Of The Year

The Seattle Mariners had a so-so start to the season, but they got hot in early June and haven’t cooled off since then. Rookie center fielder Julio Rodriguez has been a great addition to the M’s lineup, and is the odds-on favorite to win AL Rookie of the Year at -800, but the pitching has really carried this team with the 6th lowest staff ERA in baseball, and the 8th lowest bullpen ERA.

Second year pitcher Logan Gilbert has stepped up his game from his rookie season. In 27 starts and 155 innings he’s posted an 11-5 record, a 3.35 ERA and a 1.21 WHIP with 142 strikeouts. And he’s kept mistakes to a minimum, giving up just 42 walks and 17 bombs.

Seattle Mariners vs Chicago White Sox Prediction

Both starters are in pretty good current form, although Cueto and Gilbert have each given up more hits and a higher opposing team batting average in August and early September.

The Mariners’ bullpen is in the top 10 in relief corps ERA, while the White Sox pen is in the bottom 10. This should be a close, low-scoring game that could go either way. But I’ll lean towards Seattle tonight on the moneyline.

Prediction: Seattle Mariners Moneyline
