San Francisco Giants vs Colorado Rockies Analysis

The Colorado Rockies travel to Oracle Park to take on the San Francisco Giants in the first of a three game set. Right-hander German Marquez takes the hill against hard-throwing southpaw Carlos Rodon.

The Rockies come limping into the Bay area after going 2-5 on their recent homestand against Miami and Atlanta, and losing their last four to the Braves. San Fran comes back home after going 5-5 on a 10-game roadie in Cincinnati, Philly and Miami.

Colorado Rockies Betting Preview

After a good month of April, the Rockies have reverted to the Rockies we’ve known for years. A club that can put up a lot of hits and runs, but also gives up a lot of hits and runs to opposing lineups.

Rockies starter German Marquez has been Joe Namath-type “strug-gl-ling” this year on the mound. In 10 starts and 55.0 innings, the righty has a 6.81 ERA and a 1.61 WHIP along with 46 strikeouts. Even when you play half your games at Coors Field, these are really bad numbers.

San Francisco Giants Betting Preview

The Giants come into today’s action with a 29-24 record, good for 3rd in the NL West and 5.5 games behind the Dodgers. And they’re one of the few teams with a better OPS than the Rockies – 4th at .735 with a team average of .244.

Carlos Rodon has cooled down after a really good start to the season. However, he still has solid numbers after 10 starts and 55.0 innings with a 3.44 ERA, 1.25 WHIP and 70 strikeouts.

He pitched well in his May 9 start against Colorado going 6.0 innings, giving up six hits, two earned runs and striking out 12.

After a great month of April on the mound, the Giants pitching has imploded over the last five weeks. Their bullpen is in the bottom six of MLB at a 4.47 ERA and 1.35 WHIP, and the team is 24th best with a 4.30 ERA.

Their staff has more talent than what their stats are showing, and they should be due for some positive regression. But until I see a string of good outings and proof they’ve turned things around, I’ll probably continue to fade most Giants pitchers.

San Francisco Giants vs Colorado Rockies Prediction

This game seems to set up really well for both lineups. The Rockies are #1 in MLB in OPS versus southpaws, the Giants are #8 in OPS against righties – and they’re going against a struggling right-hander in Marquez.

There are a couple of factors that give me some cause for pause. The Rockies play their first game tonight on the road after a seven-game homestand, which for hitters has been known as the “Coors Field hangover.”

The Giants will play their first home game in 11 outings – which has also been a situation to fade the home team. But the opening total of 7.5 runs seems a bit low (even for pitcher-friendly Oracle Park).

Right now these two teams are so good at hitting and so bad at pitching. And I can’t trust either bullpen to hold their favorite beverage – much less a lead late in games – so I don’t see how this game stays under eight runs. That’s why I’ll take the full game over.

Prediction: Over 8 Total Runs Scored
