Giants vs Rockies Analysis

The Colorado Rockies travel to Oracle Park to take on the San Francisco Giants for a battle of southpaws, Austin Gomber going against strikeout specialist Carlos Rodon.

The Rox look to bounce back after dropping two of three at Arizona, and the Giants are coming off a four-game split with the Cardinals at home.

Rockies Preview

Last year, road games were a house of horrors for the Rockies. But this year, they’ve exorcised those demons and played well away from Coors Field with a 5-7 record.

Austin Gomber has quietly gotten off to a good start for Colorado. In five starts and 28.2 innings of work, he has an ERA of 3.58, a 1.23 WHIP and 27 strikeouts with just eight walks.

The Rockies’ offense is still performing well, with the highest OPS and team batting average in baseball. A big reason for that is they’ve hit really well against left-handed pitching, with the 2nd-highest road OPS versus southpaws.

This will be a great matchup against one of the best lefties in the game, and one of the best lefty-hitting lineups in baseball.

Giants Preview

One of the best moves the Giants’ front office made this year was signing Carlos Rodon from the White Sox. In five starts and 29.0 innings he has an ERA of 1.55, WHIP of 0.83, and 41 strikeouts. These are career best numbers for Rodon, even though it’s still early in the year.

San Francisco’s bullpen started the year really well as one of the top five in baseball. But in recent games, the firemen have been gas cans. The team relievers’ ERA has gone up a full point and is now 15th-best in baseball.

The Giants offense got some good news this week, with Mike Yastrzemski and Lamonte Wade Jr. returning to the team.

Giants vs Rockies Prediction

Although Rodon is one of the best starting pitchers in baseball, the Rockies have hit left-handers well on the road. In 140 plate appearances, Colorado has the second highest OPS on the road against LHP.

Meanwhile, the Giants are 18th against southpaws for OPS, and Gomber has established himself as a solid starter in the Rox rotation.

Colorado has done a good job of staying in recent games through at least the first five innings, and I like the price they’re getting – plus an extra half run. That’s why I’ll take the Rockies on the 1st 5 innings run line.

Prediction: 1st 5 innings Rockies Run Line +1.0
