Giants vs Rockies Analysis

The Colorado Rockies try to salvage the last of a three-game series against the San Francisco Giants in Oracle Park. It’s a battle of right-handers with Chad Kuhl going against Alex Cobb.

Rockies Preview

The good news for the Rockies in the first two games of this series: They faced two left-handed pitchers, who they usually hit pretty well. The bad news? Neither game was really close and lost by a combined 10 runs.

Colorado will start their pitcher with the lowest ERA in the rotation, so hopefully they can keep the game close before handing it off to the bullpen.

Chad Kuhl has put up some really good numbers to start the season with a 1.82 ERA, 0.84 WHIP and 22 strikeouts in 29.2 innings of work.

However, they’ve come against some of the weaker lineups in MLB: Texas, Detroit, Cincinnati, Philadelphia and Arizona. Today’s game will be Kuhl’s biggest test this year, as he faces a Giants team with a 9th-best OPS of .707.

Giants Preview

The Giants are proving again why they’re one of the best teams in MLB. Solid starting pitching and timely hitting gave them two easy wins Monday and Tuesday.

This afternoon they’ll send right-hander Alex Cobb to the mound. Cobb hasn’t put up great numbers to start the year, with a 4.84 ERA, 1.53 WHIP in four starts and 15.0 innings of work.

He had a terrible outing on May 1 against Washington, where he didn’t make it out of the first inning and gave up five runs with only one earned. His last start on May 6 against the Cardinals was a lot better. He went 5.0 innings, giving up three hits and two earned runs, one home run and struck out eight.

San Francisco’s lineup has finally come to life, getting more consistent hitting all the way through the lineup. Tuesday night their seven through nine hitters – Dubon, Gonzalez and Casali – went a combined 6-for-9 with 3 RBI and two runs scored.

Giants vs Rockies Prediction

The first two games have proven why San Francisco will be a playoff contending team this year, and the Rockies won’t.

The glaring difference in talent and results is on the mound with the starting pitching and bullpen. Colorado still has an above .500 record, but I don’t think it’ll stay there as they play more games away from Coors Field.

The Giants play a more consistent, fundamentally sound brand of baseball, and have shown why they won 107 games last year. And why they’ll be in the playoff race in September. I’ll take San Fran on the run line.

Prediction: Giants -1.5 (+105)
